At the time Matlin was widely considered the front-runner with Turner & Spacek as possible spoilers. Weaver & Fonda were seen as having no chance.

I do think it current Academy members could vote on this field Weaver would win with Matlin second.

Likely Academy voting at the time based on predictions, critics awards, etc was probably 2. Turner 3. Spacek 4. Weaver 5. Fonda. It worth noting that Weaver’s Ripley became way way more iconic after Aliens and at the time it simply wasn’t the type of performance in the type of film that the Academy rewarded (Spacek in Carrie in another example).

The Jane Fonda nomination was a big surprise Oscar morning – Jessica Lange or Anne Bancroft were widely considered to be the strongest candidates for the 5th spot.

My personal ranking is Spacek, Turner, Weaver, Matlin, Fonda.

Personal favourites of the year for me are the Crimes trio, the ‘night Mother duo, Sigourney Weaver, Melanie Griffith, Chloe Webb, Sandrine Bonnaire (Vagabond), Mia Farrow (Hannah and Her Sisters) & Beatrice Dalle (Betty Blue).

I’ll agree with those who said Turner was the only real option outside of Matlin for the voters. Matlin over does it a bit for me but it’s still a good performance. I’d rank them last out of the nominees and could easily change my mind about who gets my number 1 spot between Fonda, Spacek & Weaver. All 3 were fabulous. Fonda’s film was not very good as a whole, although she & her two male co-stars were great.

    Personal rankings:
    1. Sigourney Weaver, Aliens
    2. Jane Fonda, The Morning After
    3. Sissy Spacek, Crimes of the Heart
    4. Kathleen Turner, Peggy Sue Got Married
    5. Marlee Matlin, Children of a Lesser God

    My own nominees:
    1. Bette Midler, Down and Out In Beverly Hills
    2. Sigourney Weaver, Aliens
    3. Jane Fonda, The Morning After
    4. Sissy Spacek, Crimes of the Heart
    5. Ellen Greene, Little Shop of Horrors

I realize Midler is teetering between lead & support. I’d nominate her as supporting for “Ruthless People” that year. 1986 was an incredible year for her. I wish there were more room for Farrah Fawcett. Although I’m not really a fan of Melanie Griffith’s, she was wonderful in “Something Wild”. I love the mentions of Anne Bancroft in “‘night Mother” earlier. She is one of my two absolute favorites, but as much as I love her the work there was too much for me to include. She was the saving grace of the film though.

They got that one right, Lange was not nomination worthy in Crimes of the Heart.

    My rankings:

    1. Kathleen Turner, Peggy Sue Got Married
    2. Jane Fonda, The Morning After
    3. Sissy Spacek, Crimes Of The Heart
    4. Sigourney Weaver, Aliens
    5. Marlee Matlin, Children Of a Lesser God

    Other great performances:

    Helena Bonham-Carter, A Room With a View
    Beatrice Dalle, Betty Blue
    Farrah Fawcett, Extremities
Tracy Camila Johns, She’s Gotta Have It
Jessica Lange, Crimes Of The Heart

My finalists: Bonham-Carter, Dalle, Fawcett, Fonda and Turner. Beatrice Dalle gave my favorite performance by an actress as the fiery lead character in Betty Blue!

Weaver in Aliens is a masterclass of acting. Should have won hands down.
