Marisa Tomei won the award in a race that could have gone to anyone.
Judy Davis – Husbands and Wives
Miranda Richardson – Damage
Joan Plowright – Enchanted April
Vanessa Redgrave – Howards End
I would have voted for Vanessa Redgrave’s utterly moving and evocative turn as Mrs. Ruth Wilcox.May 28, 2021 at 10:13 pm #1204277343
Richardson’s brief but powerful performance in Damage.May 28, 2021 at 10:36 pm #1204277345
Love Tomei’s performance and the win, as well. But if I’m being honest with myself, I am drawn more to Davis’ performance.May 28, 2021 at 11:53 pm #1204277364

Miranda Richardson in “Damage.” Bonus points for “The Crying Game.”May 29, 2021 at 4:13 am #1204277448
Judy Davis in Husbands and Wives OR Vanessa Redgrave in Howards EndMay 29, 2021 at 5:55 am #1204277521
Miranda Richardson. She was really really great in Damage AND The Crying Game, and Enchanted April. She’s THE underrated actress.
RU: Both Dame Joan Plowright & Vanessa RedgraveMay 29, 2021 at 6:09 am #1204277525
Marisa Tomei rightfully won. Rex Reed, the bastard that he is, can go screw himself!May 29, 2021 at 6:32 am #1204277542
It’s a difficult choice but I would’ve gone with Judy Davis, who was an absolute force of nature in Husbands and Wives. But Vanessa Redgrave was absolutely hypnotising in Howard’s End in what was the definition of a scene stealing supporting performance, so I’d have been equally happy for her to have taken it.
Emmy FYC!!: Chloe Sevigny (We Are Who We Are), MJ Rodriguez (Pose), Billy Porter (Pose), Emma Corrin (The Crown), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Maya Erskine (Pen15), Anna Konkle (Pen15), Naomi Ackie (Master of None), Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad), Kate Winslet (Mare of Easttown), Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You)May 29, 2021 at 11:07 am #1204277862
Even though I would’ve voted for Judy Davis, there is no way to deny that Tomei was hilarious and memorable in MY COUSIN VINNY.

1. Judy Davis, Husbands and Wives
2. Miranda Richardson, Damage
3. Marisa Tomei, My Cousin Vinny
4. Joan Plowright, Enchanted April
5. Vanessa Redgrave, Howards End
Helena Bonham Carter, Howards End
Alfre Woodard, Passion Fish
I had my issues with Husbands and Wives but Davis is AMAZING and she likely lost due to the backlash of the director at the time. As mentioned by various posters above, Richardson was having a stellar year and her major scene in Damage is shattering. Tomei is WORTHY and she makes me smile every time she’s on screen. I’m surprised so many people are drawn towards Redgrave in Howards End. I’ve always felt she was a glorified cameo and only was nominated because she was a name check. I need to revisit this film to re-evaluate her brief performance. I would have easily nominated Bonham Carter from the same film, as I felt she was the perfect actress for that role opposite Emma Thompson. Alfre Woodward SHOULD have also been nominated for her stunning and subtle work as the caring and complex Chantelle.
