    Kathy Bates
    Misery (1990)
    Richard Jewell (2019)

    Renee Zellweger
    Cold Mountain (2003)
    Judy (2019)

Of course Bates’ film and performance is an unknown and this thread will become an embarrassment if the worse were to occur. But for now entertain me and yourselves with this plausible possibility.

I hope Bates gets traction once the season gets into full-swing. Positive she’ll be far better than most of the current leading contenders. It would be nice to see her get a second, even if I don’t really care for her first.

Count me among those who don’t really care what happens with Zellweger, though. Her performance is fine, but there’s about 30-40 other lead performances that I much prefer.

I’m intrigued by your less than stellar attitude toward Bates’ first win. Why?

Part of it has to do with the film itself; I generally do not care for King’s work, so most of the adaptations are not my cup of tea. Reiner’s was no different. And while I appreciate Bates’ menace, I also do not see a whole lot of interesting interpretation.

I guess it really is just “this is not for me.” I’m sorry!

Her girlish glee adds so much humanity to her characterization. Remembering her girlhood, approving a draft of his manuscript, and the invitation to dinner are necessary components to fleshing out a villain without cheap sentimentality trauma.

For me it’s folly to dismiss that team of Bates and Eastwood. I’m not one to hold a person’s recent record against them.
If things go right it would just make things more interesting, with a group of talented thespians fighting for the win.

She was a lunatic that looked just like anyone else. The fact she wasn’t added to her performance. S.King isn’t Shakespeare, but Kathy got the essence of her character right.

I find King’s work often translates better on film than it reads on the page, at least with some directors – like how de Palma made a deft film out of a hopelessly bogged down debut novel in Carrie, and Kubrick rid The Shining of most of its banalities (side note: shorter European cut of this film is the best version).

May I ask why you’re listing her R rated films? To illustrate that they aren’t necessarily a handicap?
I was proud of her when she stripped off her clothes in AS.
