Thanks for doing this Pacinofan! It’s great to see my top 4 films in the top 10, 3 of which were the top 3 here! Especially love the support for The Hunt, and the Crash Reel, which I didn’t think anyone else saw.

I forgot to discuss the changes to the top ten list from last week’s results.

The top two films remained the same. “Before Midnight” and “The Act of Killing” switched spots. “The Hunt” moved ahead of “Stories We Tell”. “The Crash Reel” and “In the House” entered the top ten list tied with “Stories We Tell” in 7th place. “Gravity” remained in 8th place but “Captain Phillips” moved ahead of “Nebraska” into 9th place.

Thanks, pacinofan. Glad there was such deep love for Her.

Though I have a question. Technically, wouldn’t a tie mess up the rankings a bit, turning it into a Top 18? I’d figure it would look more like…

    1)      Her 4.42 (22)

    2)      12 Years a Slave 4.293 (23)

    3)      Before Midnight 4.266 (16)

    4)      The Act of Killing 4.25 (13)

    5)      The Wolf of Wall Street 4.207 (23)

    6)      The Hunt 4.192 (13)

    7)      The Crash Reel 4.125 (6)***/ In the House 4.125 (6)***/ Stories We Tell 4.125 (14) (tie)

    10)      Gravity 4.115 (24)

    11)      Captain Phillips 4.0 (21)

    12)  Nebraska 3.971 (17)

    13)  Blackfish 3.926 (14)

    14)  Mud 3.921 (19)

    15)  Lore 3.917 (6)/ Philomena 3.917 (18) (tie)

    17)  The Spectacular Now 3.909 (11)

    18)  Inside Llewyn Davis 3.906 (16)

Here is a list of all the films that spent some time in the Top 10…

    Before Midnight
    Captain Phillips
    The Crash Reel
    Gravity
    Her
    The Hunt
    In the House
    Nebraska

The only one of these films that fell out of the Top 10 was “Philomena”.

I have always allowed ties just as certain film critics allow ties in their own top ten ilsts.

Also, even though I have done this for a while I did not invent this event. I took it over from a member who did it a few times and then left the site. As far as I remember she allowed ties. The only thing I changed from her methods is I alow a film to enter the Rankings with five viewers and she waited for seven.

Past winners of the Goldderby Rankings while I ran it were “The Hurt Locker”, “WALL-E”, “The Social Network”, “A Separation” and “Persepolis”. Maybe some more that I cannot remember. If someone else remembers a winner I have failed to mention please inform me in this thread.

“Zero Dark Thirty” won last year but it is a winner with an *. I used a different methodology because I did not have the time to do the normal Rankings. I collected top ten lists so fans of the films could get a film high in the rankings but there were no bad grades to lower a film’s grade.

Great list, thanks for this, very cool.

The top 5 is eerily close to my own (switch 12 Years and Her, haven’t seen Before Midnight).

I agree with Halo_Insider’s method of counting for logical reasons, but not a huge deal because, like him, I can just rearrange it myself.

Only two of Oscar’s Best Picture nominees were in my top nine films of the year.  Here, The Wolf of Wall Street and The Hunt are the only two, so I guess I am no more compatible with Gold Derby than the Oscars.

Thank you, pacinofan.  Frozen appears twice on the list, by the way.

Another interesting way to look at these results is by how many of us saw them:

    25: American Hustle
    24: Gravity
23: The Wolf of Wall Street, 12 Years a Slave
    22: Blue Jasmine, Her
21: Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club
19: Frozen, Mud, Star Trek into Darkness
18: The Butler, Philomena, Prisoners, This is the End
17: The Great Gatsby, Man of Steel, Nebraska, The Place Beyond the Pines
16: Before Midnight, Inside Llewyn Davis
15: August: Osage County, Catching Fire, Elysium, Frances Ha, Iron Man 3, Monsters University, Saving Mr. Banks
14: All is Lost, Blackfish, Enough Said, Pacific Rim, Stories We Tell, World War Z
13: The Act of Killing, The Croods, The Desolation of Smaug, Don Jon, Fruitvale Station, The Hunt, Spring Breakers
12: Oz the Great and Powerful, Rush, Side Effects, The Way, Way Back, The World’s End
    11: The Spectacular Now, Stoker
10: The Bling Ring, Blue is the Warmest Color, Despicable Me 2, Only God Forgives, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Short Term 12, The Square, The Wolverine

This list is awesomesauce, and not just because it’s eerily similar to what my personal top 10 will be.

The best part of this methodology came through again: it creates a great balance of films everyone has seen and loved with lesser known films that are nevertheless loved by most everyone who sees them.
