Laugh all you want, but it is telling that La La Land’s main competition couldn’t even win their respective categories. Those industry snubs and and the entire voting body voting makes La La Land a frontrunner. Also shout out to Hidden Figures with their guild wins. It’s too bad that it got the bare minimum at Oscars, but like how so many mention its win is its historic BO run. Hopefully it being such the game-changer is good for the industry going forward.

La La land won’t be winning this because of it’s costumes, but because of the sweep mentality that seems to surround it. Some of the costumes have great color coordination, but others like the coffee shop uniform aren’t something to behold and the voters know that. It just depends if the voters want to reward the most deserving or the most hyped. Still predicting Jackie though.

It’s more telling that it managed to win Bafta which has a voting body that’s very similar to the Academy’s

I would argue that Jackie’s win at BAFTA has more to do with that film landing more with that audience than Americans. It’s very European in its style.

It’s a movie about an American First Lady.

I’m so tired of people dismissing Bafta like this. “Hmm, X won instead of Y, which we were expecting. Is X British?” or “X has European appeal!” So La La Land wins 5 Baftas, but the one Jackie wins is because it’s more European? Okay.

Also funny is how there’s always talk about “British bias” at Bafta, but never about “American bias” at the Oscars.

It’s a movie about an iconic First Lady done in a style that is very unconventional. Most were expecting a paint-by-numbers story of Jackie O., but Pablo Larrin was like “bitch, you thought!”. It hasn’t connected to American audiences besides film nerds and Twitter geighs. That is not to say that is a bad thing, but it also can’t be ignored. La La Land won the key expected awards at BAFTAs that it is locked for at the Oscars and the costume one isn’t since that category considers period pieces. But with the American costume industry paying Jackie dust at their guild awards and La La Land being rewarded, that is something to think about is all I am saying.

They should have gone with kubo and the two strings instead of dr strange. It was much more technical to create numerous japanese costumes with intricate detail for puppets in various stages of motion, rather than just go for the comic book adaptation costume

I think Hidden Figures would’ve beaten La La Land if there was just one category with this guild.

Jackie losing is a blow, but the guilds sometimes use their awards as their own Best Picture awards.  Remember when The Descendants beat The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for ACE?  More importantly, 12 Years a Slave beat The Great Gatsby in the very CDG category in which Best Picture nominee Hidden Figures just beat Best Picture flop Jackie.
