So we already do “Who Came In Second”, but I thought I’d shake it up and ask which nominee you think received the fewest votes.
My thoughts:Best Picture:Hell or High Water
This was tough. I eliminated LLL, Moonlight, Manchester, and Arrival right away. Considering the others, Hidden Figures did win SAG ensemble, so it’d have some support from the acting branch. Hacksaw received Best Director and won both Film Editing and Sound Mixing, so I think it had enough support. Fences had a SAG Ensemble nom, as well as Denzel and Viola, and Lion did receive 6 nominations in a lot of different aspects. My pick is Hell or High Water because it only received 4 nominations and had no shot at any of them (unlike Lion which contended in a lot of different categories and had a DGA nomination).Best Director:Mel Gibson
Only one who didn’t get a DGA nomination.Best Actor:Viggo Mortensen
The only nomination Captain Fantastic received, so I don’t think a ton of members saw it. It did get a SAG Ensemble nom, though, so a good argument could be made for Garfield or Gosling.Best Actress:Ruth Negga
I seriously considered Huppert here, but I think the people who saw it liked her so much they voted for her, whereas Negga didn’t seem to be #1 in very many places.Best Supporting Actor:Michael Shannon
Only one who didn’t get a SAG nomination.Best Supporting Actress:Nicole Kidman
Octavia Spencer is a good choice as well, but I think enough people loved Hidden Figures that they voted for her just to give it something.Best Original Screenplay:The Lobster
Seems too weird for Academy’s taste.Best Adapted Screenplay:Fences
This was tough as well. I went with this over Lion because Lion won BAFTA.Best Original Score:Passengers
Even though Thomas Newman is a respected name, it got so few accolades compared to the others.Best Original Song:The Empty Chair

I seriously considered Huppert here, but I think the people who saw it liked her so much they voted for her, whereas Negga didn’t seem to be #1 in very many places. How could anyone in their righ mind consider Huppert to be dead last!? She was clearly second! My god she sucked more cocks and licked more anuses during that voting period than Jennifer Lawrence at beginning of her career! And I’m so proud of her for shamelessly whoring herself out last season! It still pisses me off that fucking legend lost to walking jelly. Fuck you Academy.

Original Screenplay: 20th Century Women
Adapted Screenplay: Hidden FiguresMay 2, 2017 at 12:55 am #1202082172Picture: Hell or High Water was definitely not last for BP. It’s a typical Oscar-bait and the ‘old white male’ voters probably loved the film. Hidden Figures with it’s SAG ensemble win was in Top 3 in the end.
The god-awful Fences was last. The voters loved the lead (!!!) stars of the film, and voted on it because of them, but I doubt they’ve sit through that play.
Director: Kenneth Lonergan. He had a good chance with Original Screenplay so I don’t think they’ve considered giving him a Director win as well. Mel Gibson is too buzzed in the business to be last in these polls.
Actor: Probably Garfield. It’s a bigger achievement to make the cut on your own (Mortensen), it means you have your passionate fans among voters.
Actress: Meryl Streep.
Supporting Actor: Michael Shannon.
Supporting Actress: Naomie Harris. Octavia Spencer was too good to be last, here I said it.
ReplyCopy URLMay 2, 2017 at 12:36 pm #1202082708I’m shocked this isn’t unanimous for the shit pile called Feces to be dead last in BP and Adapted Screenplay. When the BAFTA and Globes didn’t even nominate Feces for both categories. Least Hidden Figures has the box office (aka people saw the film) and showed up in adapted screenplay in all the major precursor. And Hell or High Water got best film nom in GG and capable of getting more than 1 nomination at BAFTA.
ReplyCopy URLMay 2, 2017 at 3:19 pm #1202082842I think Fences was bottom tier. I don’t think a whole bunch of voters put it in their top five for rewarding and I think it barely made Picture.

May 2, 2017 at 4:13 pm #1202082869I actually believe that Negga was second. A lot of people really liked her and it seemed to be a four horse race with her being the one out of the race. A lot of times that one person without a chance ends up winning because of vote splitting. She should have won tbh. Her Portman or Huppert.
