Despite it being the oldest and most common genre of filmmaking, since the 90s the Romantic Comedy has been on a downward spiral ever since we only a few bright spots in-between.

In 2017, The Big Sick became a critically (Oscar nom) and commercial success ($60m) and so far in 2018 we have had

    • Love, Simon
    • The Guernsey Litrerary & Potato Peel Pie Society
    • Book Club
    • Set It Up
    • Alex Strangelove
    • Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again
    • To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
    • Crazy Rich Asians

So, is the Romantic Comedy officially back, are now living a new golden age

True to all except Alex Strangelove. A truly bad movie

Good point, Brayden Fitzsimmons. I guess the world can use the uplifting power of romantic comedies in these times of darkness.

Alex Strangelove has received very good notices so it definitely plays a part in the rom-com comeback (whether any given individual thinks it was bad or not is irrelevant; as a whole, it has been received warmly and therefore matters in this context).

I don’t think anyone mentioned the kissing booth. It’s a truly terrible movie but has become extremely popular with young people. Joey king went from having 500k to 7.1 million followers on instagram in the span of a couple months.

I could not agree more. I was into it for the first 30 or so minutes, but then it just became this film about the girl lying to everyone and trying to justify dating an asshole.

There have been better movies than Set It Up this year but it has such a rewatch factor unlike most of those that makes it so great.

I Feel Pretty and Overboard were also moderate box office hits for the genre this year.

I feel Netflix really step their game up for this genre and I hope they continue to roll better quality rom-com movies next year.  I’ve watched 6 out of 10 of those movies and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before was the only one that stuck with me. Set It Up pretty good, Crazy Rich Asians good but overrated, Love, Simon and Alex Strangelove very derivative, and Mamma Mia is a mess although I feel it’s better than the first one. I look forward to J -Lo Second Act because the trailer looks like a throwback to her rom-com movie that propel her career.
