Why was Joker‘s Make-up nominated in Best Period and/or Character Make-Up but the Hairstyling in Best Contemporary Hair Styling?

Wow this is early! Cats really is dead, huh. Bombshell and Joker to rule the day.

Also lol Laundromat got nominated. Just shows the disconnect between twitter/GD and industry.

Them nominating The Laundromat doesn’t really show any sort of disconnect between Twitter/GD and the industry. It’s not like they nominated it for a best film or best screenplay award. You can appreciate and nominate technical aspects of a movie even if it’s not awards-worthy in any other way (i.e. Suicide Squad, Passengers, Maleficent, etc.).

Bro, they nominated it in the very category people were criticizing it for. Like lol.

    Da wig was nominated.

Thanks for posting! I like picking up clues as to the amount of under the radar support the films might have.

    Interesting exclusions.

These awards don’t seem to be any indicator of Oscar love going by last years nominees:

Best Contemporary Make-Up in a Feature-Length Motion Picture nominees last year included Beautiful Boy, Boy Erased, Welcome to Marween, and Widows, all of which received 0 Oscar nominations. The only one to do well at the Oscars was A Star is Born.

Best Period and/or Character Make-Up nominees last year included the 0 nominated Stan & Ollie, as well as Mary Queen of Scots and Mary Poppins Returns which were not exactly Oscar favorites.

It’s the makeup and hair styling guilds lol. It’ll give you a better idea on the Oscar shortlist and what will get in for Hair and Makeup. Not best picture.

They’ve said it before on different occasions, all of the remaining categories will be up for predicting once their shortlists are revealed.
