Most important to me is that Wildlife get lots of nominations: Best First Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Female Lead (Carey Mulligan), Best Supporting Male (Jake Gyllenhaal), Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing, for a total of 7 nominations! (:

The Spirit Awards thread I had started MONTHS before FreemanGriffin started his has evidently been deleted. That’s very annoying but I can get over it.

Get Out was a “First Feature” and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was surely the definition of an “International Film” but those weirdly didn’t compete for those categories and instead were nominated in and won for the general Best Film Award category.

Going off of the specific category designations, here is what I think some of the nominees will look like in a couple days. In no particular order, this is an incomplete list, as I’m only predicting the nominees I feel most sure of at the moment. I really don’t know if Blackkklansman will be eligible, I think it could simply be under-recognized here to make way for lesser known films.

    Best Feature:

    First Reformed

    If Beale Street Could Talk

    The Miseducation of Cameron Post

    Support The Girls

    Searching

    Best First Feature:

    Eighth Grade

    Sorry To Bother You

    Hereditary

    Wildlife

    Thoroughbreds

    Best Male Lead:

    Ethan Hawke “First Reformed”

Lakeith Stanfield “Sorry To Bother You”

Stephan James “If Beale Street Could Talk”

    Ben Foster “Leave No Trace”

    John Cho “Searching”

    Best Female Lead:

    Regina Hall “Support The Girls”

    Toni Collette “Hereditary”

Melissa McCarthy “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”

    Glenn Close “The Wife”

    Elsie Fisher “Eighth Grade”

    Some more strong contenders…

    Maggie Gyllenhaal “The Kindergarten Teacher”

Kiki Layne “If Beale Street Could Talk”

Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy “Thoroughbreds”

    Nicole Kidman “Destroyer”

    Carey Mulligan “Wildlife”

    Michelle Pfeiffer “Where is Kyra?”

    Kathryn Hahn “Private Life”

    Claire Foy “Unsane”

Chloe Moretz “The Miseducation of Cameron Post”

    Thomasin McKenzie “Leave No Trace”

(If it doesn’t compete in International) Yalitza Aparicio “Roma”

DAMN Female Lead is such an insanely packed category! You know what, just consider this specific category not my actual predictions of the final 5 nominees, but just a ton of contenders, 5 of which I think will make up the final 5 nominees. The question is which ones?

    Best Supporting Male

Richard E. Grant “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”

    Alex Wolff “Hereditary”

    Jake Gyllenhaal “Wildlife”

    Adam Driver “Blackkklansman”

    Best Supporting Female

Regina King “If Beale Street Could Talk”

    Best Director

    Searching

    If Beale Street Could Talk

    Leave No Trace

    Destroyer

    Blackkklansman

    Best Screenplay:

    First Reformed

    Can You Ever Forgive Me?

    If Beale Street Could Talk

    The Miseducation of Cameron Post

    Searching

    First Screenplay:

    Eighth Grade

    Thoroughbreds

    Sorry To Bother You

(A couple movies I probably won’t have even heard of. Unlike Female Lead where there are too many strong contenders, First Screenplay doesn’t seem like there is enough of them.)

    Best Cinematography:

    Unsane

    The Kindergarten Teacher

    Wildlife

    Hereditary

    At Eternity’s Gate

    Best Editing:

    Searching

    Blackkklansman

    Unsane

    If Beale Street Could Talk

    Sorry To Bother You

    Best Documentary:

    Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

    Free Solo

    Minding the Gap

    Bisbee ’17

    Shirkers

    Best International Film:

    The Favourite

    Cold War

    Roma

    Revenge

(Some 4th movie I’m not even aware of. Even Revenge could get snubbed, but I sure hope not, since that movie was such impressively well-crafted brutality.)

    Robert Altman Award:

    The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

I will guess that that Robert Altman award will go to BlackKKlansman, if it is eligible.

I want Carey Mulligan to win Best Female Lead. I wasn’t expecting anything from her and she astounded me with her best ever performance.

I haven’t seen enough of these films and performances to make anything but wild predictions ): I sure wish films were more readily available earlier.

Does anyone know what time on Friday the announcement of the nominees will be made?

I just wish that we knew which specific films were and were not eligible and for what specific categories.

Chris Beachum already said that the announcement would be Friday at 10:00 (Pacific Standard Time). I would guess in the AM since most awards nominations are announced in the AM rather than in the PM.

It is eligible. But i think the Robert Altman award will go to The Favourite, just like the Gothams, where they gave that special jury award for the ensemble performance of the three leading ladies.

I also would love to see Carey Mulligan get a nomination (obviously for the win i’m rooting for my girl Glenn). She’s such an underrated actress. She was robbed for a win in 2010 for An Education.

Think The Favourite is only eligible for the foreign film category.

There are most likely several others on the borderline, but I have not heard from their reps yet about eligibility. If you have specific ones you want for me to question, let me know.

Hi, Chris. Are GreenBook , IfBealeStreetCouldTalk ,and CanYouEverForgiveMe eligible?

It’s always interesting to see what films/performances end up being eligible here…
    My guess for Actress:
    Glenn Close, The Wife
    Elise Fisher, Eighth Grade
    Nicole Kidman, Destroyer
Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me
    Carey Mulligan, Wildlife
    ~
next in line: Kiki Layne, Kathryn Hahn

Think The Favourite is only eligible for the foreign film category.

Foreign productions can compete in multiple categories at the Spirits.

Is Charlize Theron eligible for Tully? If so she can probably get a nomination here.

I would imagine that The Favourite’s budget would be too big anyway? It looks like more than $20 million was spent on it!

but yes, Isabelle Huppert won, so the rules aren’t very clear, which makes it impossible to predict!
