For me the Visual Effects Oscar was always important and personal.

So what 5 movies will make the final nominations?

    Mine are:

    Very strong contenders:

MOWGLI – Dark version of The Jungle Book + Andy Seriks. It will be VFX extravaganza!
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – Having all those superheroes will be enough.
READY PLAYER ONE – It’s tailor made for a nomination. Motion Capture, action, t-rex, kong, Iron giant…you get it.

Fighting for slots 4 and 5:

BLACK PANTHER – Only because it’s so popular, not because the vfx are Oscar worthy.
JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM – The last one was very close and this one seems to have improve the effects a lot. Also the animatronics are back.
SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY – Because you know… Star Wars.
MORTAL ENGINES – Peter Jackson, Weta Digital finest. Mad Max vibe.
FANTASTIC BEASTS THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD – Very hard to make it in, but it’s the Wizarding world and VFX branch likes it.
RAMPAGE – They love nominating apes effects. Even Kong: Skull island made it.

    What are your predictions?

Avengers should win this. After 10 years, it’s time for the MCU to be recognized, this way and in other categories.

James Gray has said he wants AD ASTRA to be “the most realistic depiction of space travel that’s been put in a movie”. If he pulls it off, I think the movie has a high chance of winning this.

I think for now Ready Player One is the one to beat. Predicts:

    Ready Player One
    Ad Astra
    Black Panther
    Avengers: Infinity Wars
    First Man

    (Mowgli
    Mortal Engines
Fantastic Beasts: the Crimes of Grindewald)

Yeah as much as I love BP, some of the CGI in it is quite subpar. It does not deserve a nomination here.

Apparently, it’s symptomatic of the challenges faced in the VFX industry as a whole. For instance, studios keep demanding for more work to be done within tight schedules causing a lot of vfx to look either rushed or unfinished. Read more about it here: ‘Black Panther’ is amazing. Why are its CG models so terrible?

I’m going to throw this out in the air, and say…

    Ant Man & the Wasp

A throwback to “Honey, I Shrunk The Kids”

    Isn’t Ad Astra a 2019 release?

I understand it’s getting a limited awards-qualifying run late 2018 and a wide release in January 2019, so it’s going to be a contender in the 91st Oscars. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

I will wait for a trailer. Both this and Mowgli can be big players.

I would love to see Ready Player One or Avengers: Infinity War win. I think Ready’s VFX were far better but I have wanted an MCU movie to win since the beginning so I would be happy either way.

May the best of your todays be the worst of your tomorrows.

As much as I love Black Panther, I don’t think it deserves to be nominated.

The Dvd/BlueRay version is really good, but Special Effects for the theater version was not good at all.

Watched the trailer for Mowgli. IT does look weaker than The Jungle Book. Oh Warner Bros …
