ReplyCopy URLJanuary 29, 2020 at 4:08 am #1203318087I wonder if Adele Haenel and Noemie Merlant will cancel each other out?
An Officer and a Spy (J’Accuse!) has the most nominations, with 12. Polanski has already won 4 Cesars for Best Director. Now that they have the split where the same film cannot win both BP and Best Director and we have Les Miserables and Portrait of a Lady on Fire also in the categories it’s going to be interesting to see which films win!
I hope Oh Mercy! is a return to form for Desplechin; his last few films have left a lot to be desired from me.
Very interesting list! Hoping that many of these films will be shown at my local French film festival in July!
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 29, 2020 at 4:22 am #1203318102I’ve only seen Portrait of a Lady, Les Miserables, By the Grace of God, I Lost My Body, The Swallows of Kabul & Atlantics.
Two of my favourites got zero nominations: Who You Think I Am & The Summer House but that doesn’t really surprise me.
Hope to see a number of the other nominated films in March.
Wonder how long before the Polanski film is picked up for distribution in an English speaking territory. Apparnetly the upcoming French DVD/Blu Ray release will not have English subtitles.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 29, 2020 at 4:29 am #1203318113nice to see I lost My Body get in screenplay, I heard good things about Eva Green in Proxima so I’m excited for it whenever it releases on home video. hopefully Portrait of a Lady on Fire sweeps but I doubt it wins much other than actress & screenplay. Just don’t give Polanski another directing award :/

I have read that An Officer and A Spy has been picked up for distribution for this spring. I hope so – I really want to see it!
Finally getting to see Portrait Of A Lady On Fire this weekend! It has taken forever to be released here!
Thank you for reminding me that they didn’t nominate Juliette Binoche for Who You Think I Am ): I haven’t seen it but it sounds to be wonderful from what I have read about it!
I think I will lobby hard for more of these films to be shown at the French film festival in July.

Merlant won Lumiere, where Haenal didn’t be nominated. Normally its winner doesn’t win Cesar. So Merlant has a great chance to win.

Last year there was a split – Lumieres went with Elodie Bouchez for In Safe Hands and Cesar went with Lea Drucker for Custody. Bouchez’s co-star Sandrine Kiberlain was nominated for the Cesars but not the Lumieres – similarly to Noemie and Adele this year. IDK who would win instead of Merlant. Haenel has already won two Cesars (Supporting Actress for Suzanne and Actress for Love At First Fight).
I have watched all of the trailers and loved them all! (:
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 30, 2020 at 7:10 am #1203319745Haenel is so respected and so beloved by both the Césars and the public. She won Best Newcomer and Best Actress back to back. She’s considered the new Catherine Deneuve.
I really don’t think they’ll split the vote. The voters will go for Haenel if they have to choose. But they might want to give Merlant the win since she’s been nominated two times in the Best Newcomer category.
I think it’s between the two of them. The competition isn’t very strong.
