After seeing The Irishman yesterday, I have to ask… How the fuck Niro isn’t being considered as one of the frontrunners? I know he’s getting praise, but not enough (the majority is going to Pesci and Pacino)… Serious, it’s a extremely powerfull performance, and I don’t remember the last time that I was so touched by a performance. The last 30 minutes of the movie is De Niro in his best. He conveys so much truth in his trembling words, in his melancholy look… De Niro in The Irishman is my favorite piece of acting of 2019. And this is from someone who absolute love Joker and, of course, the Joaquin performance.

Tell me more about how DiCaprio doesn’t deserve to be in the lineup.

Finally saw Pain & Glory tonight- I really hope Banderas is able to make it into the lineup. I thought he was so incredible and I was really impressed.

Darlings, some of you really have good taste and recognize Banderas’ masterclass in Pain and Glory. I’m really proud of that, dear citizens.

    Should win: Joaquin Phoenix

Should be nominated : Eddie Murphy and Taron Egerton.

Academy, please make it happen. Phoenix deserves the win and it’ll make a lot of sense to have both Murphy and Egerton on the nomination list. Bring back Murphy and give Egerton some career boost.

The two performances I am curious to see that could break in to the lineup are Mark Ruffalo in Dark Waters and the lead who plays Richard Jewell (can never remember his three part name, but I think it ends in Hauser). Each time I see the trailers for their movies I think they have potential to be nominated, but so do 8 other actors and there are only 5 slots. (Last year I was really surprised they went with Willem Dafoe for At Eternity’s Gate, so there’s always room for a surprise).

Word has been out on Dark Waters and it’s not being considered a contender. Most critics are lukewarm on it and critical of the script. I would say Ruffalo isn’t in contention.

Its so packed as it is, unless it’s a phenomenal performance I doubt Hauser could make the final cut especially because there are so many a listers in the category already. We’ll find out about Richard Jewell in a few days anyways.

While we are on the topic of personal favorites:

Disclaimer: Haven’t seen The Two Popes, Marriage Story, Joker, Dolemite is My Name, The Irishman, For v. Ferrari, The Lighthouse yet. Banderas was a close 6th but I decided to go with Efron instead.

I’m predicting a snub for Banderas. I haven’t seen any buzz for him in months outside of these forums, his film was pretty much ignored at TIFF and NYFF and Parasite has crushed its chances at an International Film win. I just think he peaked too early and he’ll probably be the Ethan Hawke of this year’s Oscar’s.
