I find it amusing how stating that Marriage Story being “only about divorce” is still seen as a logical argument against Driver. A performance can be emotionally resonant regardless of what you think of the subject matter, and I find it sad that extreme and over-the-top topics must automatically be regarded as more worthy. Common, everyday topics can be just as emotionally resonant if performed/examined well enough.

It’s far more than that and the divorce is just one aspect of a disintegrating relationship that most of us can relate with. It’s also fair to both parties. Often one is cast as a villain so our sympathies lie with the victim. I didn’t see that happening here which is a reason why I’ve kept both Director and screenplay in top five from the beginning.

Its a joke to think Joaquin Phoenix´s JOKER will lose to a divorced man.

JOKER´s cultural impact WORLDWIDE is something that rarely happens in the film industry and the performance will be talked about years from now.

    WINNER: JOAQUIN PHOENIX

Antonio, Taron, Adam and the others will be happy to be nominated next to Joaquin.

I’ll just weigh in to say that although some of what you’re saying is true, my favorite film of the year has been The Farewell since the beginning, a far smaller movie many people won’t see and less “spectacular” than Endgame, joker, and the masterpiece which is Parasite. So I disagree it’s any kind of joke.

First of all, the “Marriage Story is not a one-man show” argument is a good one because statistically, in this category, there have only been 2 co-lead winners in the last 2 decades (and that’s using the academy’s definition of co-lead, where Spacey, Bening, Redmayne, and Jones were all nominated for Actor/Actress). So the odds are 90% stacked against Driver there.

Second of all, the argument that Marrisge Story is “just about divorce” is a pretty stupid one, especially when you’re comparing it to Joker where the central premise can be distilled down to “we live in an society”. Most films start out with simple premises that are expanded upon, either through metaphorical storytelling, strong characterization, smart world-building, or any other kind of story device. I will admit I haven’t seen Marriage Story yet, but my guess is that it wouldn’t be a major contender for Picture and Screenplay if it were “just a divorce film”. You guys can defend me on that one.

Third, the argument that “Driver’s getting the most praise” is also a dumb one. He and Johansson have pretty much received equal praise from critics. GoldDerby just really wants to ignore Johansson’s praise because they don’t like her and/or her performance.

I don’t know of there is equally praise or not. But I (talking only about ME) read more praise for Driver in the reviews than for ScarJo. Just like I read more praise for Pryce than for Hopkins, though both were praised. Besides actual movie reviewers, Charlize for example loved the movie and when talking about it, highlighted Driver’s performance. Chris Evans too.

Darling, Evans highlighted Divorcing! Get your statements right.

Adam Driver is going to win the Best Actor Oscar this year. Just saw Marriage Story and while I had some reservations about the movie as a whole Driver’s performance was superb and Oscar-worthy and the best aspect of the movie by far. I know Phoenix’s fans will continue to say that he will win but I am certain Driver is going to win this year.

I mean, it was a possibility. The mixed reviews and the May release date killed his hype.

Oscars 2020: I stan Joaquin Phoenix, Willem Dafoe, Alan Silvestri, and Dean Deblois.

Emmys 2020: I stan Logan Lerman, Olivia Colman, and David Harbour.

Tom Hanks and Amy Adams stan in general.

Darlings, Thatcher really appreciates your hopes in keep saying we’ll have another Best Actor winner than Joke, but it is CLOSED. He’s not only sadly winning the Oscar, he’s SWEEPING every single televised award. I can’t wait for the meltdowns here from Nose stans.
