If anyone can vote on Animated, I predict Toy Story 4. Simply because it is the most well-known of the nominees… I think many voters will not have seen Klaus or Missing Link (more deserving winners).

Went with 1917 for VFX because it’s an easy pick for technical categories. I do believe Avengers deserves the award a lot more, however.

Film Editing I gave to Parasite because I don’t care for FvF.

I’m very tempted right now to actually switch my Editing/Sound predictions all to FvF (currently have it for Sound Mixing only). I mean, I get that 1917 wasn’t nominated for Editing for the same reason Birdman wasn’t, but it’s kind of hard for me to get past that.

Hope is one hell of a drug. I am trying not to have too many thoughts running through my head, but I’m actually split into four ways. The most pessimistic one is 1917 getting both Director and Picture. Then the other one is Parasite going against a very strong DGA history and winning Best Director, just because International is not enough, but it’s not that easy to resonate with the movie either to win BP. Then other part of me thinks Parasite is taking both, because if you give it the big award, then why would you not also have to award it for Direction, since that category has been turning lately into the “little movie that could,” where more left-field movies get recognized? Then the other one is Parasite BP and 1917 BD, with a potentially crazy thought that Parasite will actually manage to have the over 50% majority of #1s, which is rare, from the very first round, without having to redistribute the ballots and recount.

Can’t we just have a draw and call it a day :(? I actually have the feeling there will be a draw at the Oscars somewhere, similar to what happened in 2013 for the Sound Editing (Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty).

I’m still going with Parasite in both, but rather than feeling hopeful, I’ll look at it as the most pleasant of surprises if it happens. I know the 1917 people will likely go I TOLD YOU SO, but hell, I’ve been championing too hard for Parasite to let it go just now.

I’ll have Klaus for animation, but the race is extremely open there. I just think that there is a sequel fatigue (which is probably one of the reasons why Frozen II missed the nomination), with people going, “Ugh, didn’t we award Toy Story 3? Now there’s another one?” It just feels like more of the same, which might turn people off from voting for it. But then the problem I have with Klaus (other than potentially not being seen by many) is that it feels like a Christmas movie, so voters might feel it’s “outdated” in a way. And I wouldn’t rule out Missing Link either.

VFX going with 1917. The Lion King is too uncanny valley. Plus, if they didn’t award ANY of the Planet of the Apes movies for the formidable VFX, then surely they wouldn’t award The Lion King here, for something that seems inferior to what they did? Yes, I know The Jungle Book won, but even that one was superior in every way. Star Wars meh. As for the Avengers, if they didn’t care about Thanos in Infinity War (First Man won), why would they now? Save for a few exceptions, VFX most of the time goes to the best movie overall from that category, rather than best effects.

I want to believe in Parasite too, and there’s one thing that I keep running through my head even though there’s several differences between the years, guild support being the major one. I keep thinking back to the year for 2009 films, the first year there were more than 5 Best Picture nominees, and you had the “visually stunning but some criticisms of its storytelling” Avatar vs. “the little indie that could” The Hurt Locker. They didn’t go for the visually-stunning-but-lacking-elsewhere then. This year is a little different because of the split in the guilds this year vs. the dominance of Hurt Locker back then, and also they’d be picking against the war movie this year vs. for it that year, but it just keeps crossing my mind as to a reason that Parasite could go over the top.

If that happens I think this whole board will be sick and it’ll take weeks to clean up.

I certainly hope you’re wrong though. The de-aging was the very worst thing about that film.

Let’s do a prayer circle for Parasite. This film deserves to win as many awards as possible, including Best Picture.

It will go to joke or cars.

I’m going out on a limb and predicting Joker in editing. No guts, no glory.

Don’t get why people are predicting Joker to win Makeup and Hair. Bombshell swept the Makeup and Hair guilds and won BAFTA and Critics Choice. Joker would have won the BAFTA if it had any chance of winning here.

Honestly, I’d be fine with that. If only because my favorite American film of 2019 won’t be walking away empty-handed. I still have 1917 as winning VFX, but if The Irishman‘s digital-deaging won VFX, I’d gladly be wrong with that out-of-nowhere upset.
