That would legit kill her chances for BA. Or maybe not. Others have overcome it. (Holly Hunter)

but I still found Portman’s comment to be unprofessional, biased, and rude.

She did what had to be done. You can’t fight blatant sexism with “kind words” or “pretty please”s. She saw a moment and she seized it. Thanks to her Greta Gerwig got an Oscar nomination, Globe producers were so shook the next year (when they had 5 male nominees again) they had a male actor present the category alone.

Gerwig would’ve been nominated anyway. People were saying she was snubbed before Portman said it on air. All her comment did was demean five hard working and talented directors, and steal Del Toro’s spotlight.

I actually thought Portman’s comment was fair, albeit rude. Stone’s comment was worse because Gerwig was actually nominated that time and she also disrespected Peele, a black man in the process

I’ll cut Stone some slack since she was just reading off a teleprompter when she said that, unlike Portman who’s comment was obviously improvised. But you’re right in saying that Stone’s comment was worse. It’s fine to show support for a snubbed contender, just don’t do it right before you announce who’s won their category. But namedropping Gerwig when she was actually nominated is an unfair showing of bias. Emphasizing her also felt pretty embarrassing since she didn’t even win, and pretty much nobody was predicting her to pull off an upset in the first place. She was likely fourth, behind Nolan (Lady Bird was a bigger contender than Dunkirk, but the technical marvel of Nolan’s work likely put him ahead of Gerwig’s much more subdued style) and Peele.

Recent nominations have cancelled a big delusion many users had.

Oh yeah. The poor hard-working men and mean Natalie embarrassing them on air. Please. The comment was tame if anything. The truth is what people are uncomfortable with. All she said was that they were male. They were devastated I’m sure. They had to google the % of male best director nominees to feel better about themselves.

So what is going to be the “Arrival” snub of the year? It’s not like the past two years had as big of a snub that still makes these boards stir as that one!

I think it’s absurd to find Natalie’s comment offensive/unprofessional or whatever people want to call it, we as GD users and predictors have been saying for years how award shows completely leave out “minorities” (which are not minor by any means) on purpose just to keep putting the same white males on their ballots, and we know there have been some very deserving people of nominations being snubbed.

Natalie is not calling out the directors because she knows it’s not their fault, she called out the Golden Globes as a whole for never being inclusive in their lineup. She didn’t put anyone to shame other than the award show and didn’t “steal Del Toro’s spotlight”.

Just a few years we had the Oscars So White campaign because of racial issues, but if a woman wants to advocate for gender inclusivity then it is bad. Natalie made a simple yet very effective joke, but people want to point at her like there wasn’t a very in your face favouritism towards white straight males in the industry.

That’s why people want to also hate on Jessica Chastain now, calling her a SJW and annoying when she’s saying what is true.

She purposefully overshadowed Guillermo’s victory and basically said that one of those directors didn’t deserve to be nominated. Kind of a dick move.

Natalie wasn’t doing anything for women or equality, she was just butthurt that her friend Greta was snubbed.

Ohh boohoo five cis, heterosexual males had their feelings hurt. How will they live??

Women work twice as hard for half as much and no meaningful change is done without ruffling some feathers.  Nothing about what Portman said was rude and the fact that two years later people still use her remark to drag HFPA shows that. Too bad HFPA is full of older so they don’t understand why they are getting dragged, so as great as Portman’s comment was no meaningful change will happen at the Globes until a younger generation of voters is accepted to the HFPA.

    Gerwig would’ve been nominated anyway.

Also this is a stupid argument. People keep saying people are snubbed every year and it doesn’t help them at all.

I hope someone makes a Natalie-like comment at the Globes again this year, if the HFPA continues to refuse inclusivity for no reason other than they like their white celebrities I hope those celebrities embarrass them right back.

    1) Parasite deserves Best Picture. Period.

    2) I’m conflicted with Florence Pugh complete shutout sans the CC considering her amazing year with Midsommar & Little Women, and also the consistently amazing work she has been doing these last couple of years. I think they just didn’t really like the movie (sans for Saoirse who is also in thin ice).
