Reviewing the list of 20 names that were nominated for acting, I wondered which, if any, of them would be back at the Dolby Theater this year?

Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born”
    Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate”
    Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody”
    Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book”

    Best Supporting Actress
    Amy Adams, “Vice”
    Marina de Tavira, “Roma”
Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk”
    Emma Stone, “The Favourite”
    Rachel Weisz, “The Favourite”

    Best Supporting Actor
    Mahershala Ali, “Green Book”
    Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman”
Sam Elliott, “A Star Is Born”
Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
    Sam Rockwell, “Vice”

Willem Dafoe, Christian Bale and Adam Driver

Also, Sam Rockwell for Jojo Rabbit and Melissa McCarthy for The Kitchen. IDK who else has a movie this year.

These are this year’s films that would star last year’s acting nominees. However, i’ll only be listing the films where they have the best chance of being nominated (although some are pure jokes because they’re either voice performances or just not good).

    Christian Bale, Ford v Ferrari
    Olivia Colman, Them That Follow
    Willem Dafoe, The Lighthouse
    Melissa McCarthy, The Kitchen
    Adam Driver, Marriage Story
    Mahershala Ali, Alita: Battle Angel
Sam Elliott, The Lady and the Tramp
Marina de Tavira, This Is Not Berlin
    Emma Stone, Zombieland: Double Tap
Richard E. Grant, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
    Sam Rockwell, Jojo Rabbit
    Bradley Cooper, Avengers: Endgame

Only Driver, Dafoe and Bale really stand a chance of returning this year IMO. And maybe Rockwell if Jojo Rabbit is a hit and he has the performance, but I dout that tbh.

Emmy voters must bend the knee to Lena Headey & Emilia Clarke for "Game of Thrones." It's their last chance to award them. Make it happen.

    Is Dafoe coming?

Dafoe, and Driver are definitely coming. Bale is up in the air. Rockwell has slim chance but it’s still a chance. And the others should be forgotten.

The Last Thing He Wanted is now confirmed 2020, so Dafoe isn’t happening. Adam Driver is very likely, and Christian Bale is a maybe.

The Lighthouse doesn’t look like an Oscars movie, so I don’t see Dafoe happening, unless The Last Thing He Wanted ends up bigger than it looks

But neither were The Florida Project or At Eternity’s Gate. He was the sole nomination for both movies. They seem to be in a Dafoe phase right now.

Both were very well Oscar friendly movies, just flops. Lighthouse seems like a weird movie the Academy could dismiss if it’s not well received.

At Eternity’s Gate was literally dismissed entirely save for his performance (over viable competitors) though. If The Lighthouse is well received he’s returning, and I think it will be. It also looks like a co-lead performance frauded into supporting, which the Academy loves.

FYC: Carice van Houten, ‘Instinct’, Best Actress

I’m not talking just reception. One was a biopic, and one was a small praised indie. The Lighthouse looks like a weird horror thriller that could go down the Mother! route.

I don’t think the comparison is that strong. Mother! was genuinely controversial, and can’t be categorised as a horror thriller. And Dafoe is the opposite of Lawrence in that he’s currently unanimously liked and respected. At that point, Lawrence was receiving Hathaway levels of backlash.

Adam Driver will almost certainly be back, for Lead Actor this time. I also think Christian Bale will return to Lead Actor for his performance in Ford v Ferrari (which has been getting tons of buzz) and Willem Dafoe will compete in Supporting Actor for one of his many projects this year, probably the Lighthouse (which also looks like a frontrunner for Cinamatography).

I think someone said it on here once that The Lighthouse is more of a noir thriller than horror, so I could see it have an easier time of getting awards traction than both mother! and the director’s previous film.
