    September predictions:

    • 1917
    • Bombshell
    • Ford v. Ferrari
    • Joker (didn’t think it had a chance before, but with the reviews, I think this’ll be the box office nominee to go with actor this year)
    • Little Women
    • Marriage Story
    • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
    • Pain and Glory
    • The Report
    • Waves

I’m pretty sure we’ll only get 8, maybe 9, nominees this year again but I’ll fill out the 10 regardless.

I’m shocked by how many people are predicting Pain and Glory. Haven’t seen it or Parasite, but assuming the Academy hasn’t changed THAT much in one year, I’m guessing there’s only room for one of them.

Maybe Pain and Glory makes it along with Actor and Director noms (I’m only predicting Banderas rn tho, dropped Almodóvar a while ago), while Parasite is just an OScreenplay nominee (and even frontrunner; I’d love to see a foreign screenplay win but putting my delusion aside that’s not happening).

There were 2 foreign language films nominated last year though? I dont think Pain and Glory is strong enough for a BP nom but the makeup of the Academy is not the reason why it wouldnt be nominated.

I think you’ll probably be right, assuming they’re into Parasite, but I think Pain & Glory has a lot of appeal. First off, I’ve seen it and it’s definitely one of the years best so far. More pertinent to the Oscars, it’s very much about cinema, the industry and other similar things that may appeal to voters. It also has potential to get into other categories like Director, Actor, Original Screenplay and Foreign Language so could make its way into Picture.

I think if last year is anything to go by there’s certainly a keenness to get foreign films into other categories. I think Cold War was close to a BP nod last year and it getting into Director suggests to me there’s less of a barrier to foreign pictures in other categories, especially when they’re helmed by greats like Almodovar.

You’re probably right. My comment is misleading. I was more expressing my confusion by why Pain and Glory was being so heavily predicted on lists that excluded Parasite. It’s hard not to compare the two highest profile foreign language contenders. But, ya like I said, you’re probably right comparing the two’s chances is the same as comparing Parasite to Little Women or any of the other films.

However, I also think Pain and Glory is weak the same way I think Luce or Clemency or Judy are weak. I think they are critical festival successes that are great vehicles for their stars but the film itself isn’t the center of the conversation.

it’ll be interesting to see if all 3 netflix films ( Marriage Story, The Two Popes and The Irishmen) make it into the bp lineup…. many think the academy aren’t ready to embrace netflix that much

I really hope not but if the Irishman is bad they won’t have to embrace three…
