    I hate critics groups.

    Why?

Because Worst Person In The World has tanked in their awards?

    Houston winners

Original Song: “Wherever I Fall – Part I,” Cyrano: music by Bryce Dessner and Aaron Dessner; lyrics by Matt Berninger and Carin Besser

It’s not an original song, was written for the 2019 stage musical. Easily the best part of the movie and soundtrack though, and most people had no knowledge of the play beforehand, so the cheat is forgiven.

Predictions for the guilds this week

    WGA
    Original Screenplay:
Aaron Sorkin – Being the Ricardos
Adam McKay and David Sirota – Don’t Look Up
Jeymes Samuel and Boaz Yakin – The Harder They Fall
Paul Thomas Anderson – Licorice Pizza
    Zach Baylin – King Richard

Going with The Harder They Fall because WGA is very young and hip and they usually throw some populist curveballs when it’s wide open (Palm Springs, A Quiet Place, Eighth Grade, Trainwreck, Looper, etc). C’mon C’mon on the brink.
The French Dispatch doesn’t feel like a WGA choice but it could happen.
A24 didn’t send screeners for Red Rocket

    Adapted Screenplay
Jon Spaiths, Eric Roth and Denis Villeneuve – Dune
Joel Coen – The Tragedy of Macbeth
    Sian Heder – CODA
Cary Joji Fukunaga, Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Phoebe Waller-Bridge – No Time to Die
Tony Kushner – West Side Story

A mess of a category. The only things I’m sure of are Dune and CODA.
Tick, Tick… Boom can show up because, as I said, WGA is young and hip, and will be more open minded to the movie than the writers branch at the Academy will be.

Macbeth could be more like a mix of Coen’s name recognition + late release.

    DGA
    Kenneth Branagh – Belfast
Jane Campion – The Power of the Dog
Paul Thomas Anderson – Licorice Pizza
Steven Spielberg – West Side Story
    Denis Villeneuve – Dune

    First Time Feature:
Lin Manuel Miranda – Tick, Tick… Boom!
Maggie Gyllenhaal – The Lost Daughter
    Rebecca Hall – Passing
Tatiana Huezo – Prayers for the Stolen
    Valdimar Jóhannsson – Lamb

About The Novice, The Humans, Mass and Pig: According to the Richie Solomon website, DGA hasn’t received screeners for these movies, so I will not predict them. I will, however, put a question mark on Michael Sarnoski, because his profile has been consistently increasing (he got tapped to direct a movie from the A Quiet Place franchise). Shiva Baby feels like it’s too unseen to get in here.

No, it’s not eligible. TPOTD and Belfast are excluded as well: https://www.nextbestpicture.com/latest/notable-films-excluded-from-the-2021-wga-awards

Not officially, since it’s still on Original Screenplay here on Goldderby.

It’s been nominated in Original in the critics awards

    The Power of the Dog
    West Side Story

Both BTR and TTOM missed BAFTA’s editing longlist. But if one of them gets in, I hope it’s the latter. I thought the editing in that movie was actually great and I don’t understand why it underperformed in the BAFTA longlists. Maybe it wasn’t widely seen yet since it was released in January.
