No me as well, but I honestly feel like other than Hanks, who can you actually put in the 5th slot?

I have Sacha Baron Cohen for Trial of the Chicago 7 right now.

Kingsley Ben-Adir perhaps, assuming he stays lead.

Spacek definitely was a threat with her Globe, NYFCC, LAFCA, NSFC

Actually Naomi Watts won NSFC for Mulholland Drive, which she was annoyingly snubbed everywhere for. Maybe Spacek was a runner-up?

Am I the only one who isn’t predicting News of the World? I know Greengrass has had a decent track with the Oscars so far, but I’m just not seeing momentum building behind this project. Am I crazy?

I’m not predicting it for Director or Actor, since Greengrass and Hanks were snubbed for Captain Phillips despite making all of the major precursors. I am predicting it for Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and below-the-line.

Well I’m ignoring the prediction center for now, so my lineup is Hopkins/Oldman/Murray/Damon/Stanfield.

To be fair, you don’t always need momentum at this stage. No one really cared about 1917 at this point, and no one was predicting Green Book winning Best Picture until later in the season.

To be fair 1917 was woefully undermarketed. If more people knew it was a one-shot film in like October there would have been buzz for it. But that information was surprisingly hard to come by.

Wdym “at this stage” and “no one cared” and stuff? The fact is, “at this stage,” we basically know 75% of what is being nominated. Maybe we don’t have them in our top 5, but they have better than 100/1 odds. Of the 9 BP nominees last year, Parasite was the only one missing (which isnt very surprising because Oscar’s dont align with Cannes and it was FL). So instead of just making baseless claims, which is what half of the people on here have been doing, look at it objectively. Dune trailer didn’t excite you? Oh well, still a contender. Neither did TTOTCS? Oh well, still a contender. Not sure about News of the World or Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom? Oh well, still a contender! Unless you support your reasoning, for instance: “I don’t see Hillbilly Elegy being a contender for anything other than acting because it seems politically controversial, but without the polarization of Vice, and it is giving off August: OC vibes”, then please, dont say anything. There are people like wolfali and others that are using basis for many of their arguments to have enjoyable discussions, so if you “just have a hunch,” do a little more prep before you go saying something random. And instead of acting like we’re totally in the dark, give ourselves a little more credit. Just my two cents!

I guess Tenet in Director is a bit of a wildcard at this point, but I think he’ll pull a Greengrass for United 93 and make it in just off of pure passion and the quality of his work.

United 93 is like 90 on Metacritic. It’s like 3rd most acclaimed movie of 2006 there, after Pan’s Labyrinth and The Queen.

Tenet is… not that, especially that the Director’s branch doesn’t like Nolan that much snubbing him for Memento, The Dark Knight and Inception.

If Tenet is not getting into Best Picture, then it’s not getting into Director either.

He really should’ve won for Dark Night. The movie should’ve too.
