Nomadland wins the Toronto International Film Festival People’s Choice Award.

One Night in Miami came in second place.

    Beans came in third place.

All 3 films were directed by women of color (Chloé Zhao, Regina King, Tracy Deer).

yeah Nomadland is the first film to win both TIFF and Venice but technically it screened on the same day in both festivals so they can claim it was a TIFF world premiere too

Lol pls these TIFF and Venice wins are just going to foreshadow Frances McDormand catching everyone on this forum (including probably me) by surprise when she sweeps again…

    Yup.

Top three seem to be solid picks of a quiet year.

With Nomadland winning PC it sure puts Frances in a great position for Best Actress, but this actually makes the category more confusing.

Frances has everything she needs to win, but she won her second Oscar two years ago, i don’t think she will become the third woman (i think) to win three acting Oscars.

Viola is also seen as a front-runner, but she also won a few years ago and she’s black, and in over 90 years there has only been one black Best Actress winner, so that definitely makes me doubt, but it could end up being what she needs to get the award (aside from the fact that everyone thinks if a black actress deserves BA is her).

At the moment i’m thinking another contender could rise above the other’s weaknesses and snatch the Oscars, but we’ll have to see who that is.
