After seeing the Metacritic score for Chicago 7 i am skeptical about Sorkin in Director, not that it means anything, but it shows that it’s not completely raved and i thought it would be a lot higher.

I’ll wait till some precursors to see if i feel he will make it.

yeah i dont buy sorkin in director either but this is a strange year.

Da 5 bloods reminds me of those early acclaimed films that get forgotten during festival hype only to come roaring back. I think it will get key noms in actor, bp, and screenplay.

I’ve seen a few comments like this, and I’m just wondering what some recent examples are.

And he won’t. Trial is this year’s Green Book.

74/100 is kind of tepid for a Best Picture player. Yeah Green Book happened but we don’t need another one

Yeah, right now he’s a possible #5 spot and chances are he’ll fall after more contenders come out.

Green Book is the kind of film that can get away with being flawed and having a so so critic reception, but to me Chicago 7 needed to be a high 80’s/ low 90’s score to contend for a Best Picture win and more nominations. It could be more of a Hidden Figures.

Well, it feels like lately, there’s always at least one Best Actor nomination from a non-BP contender (Pain and Glory, Captain Fantastic, Roman Israel, Eternity’s Gate, Trumbo). Lindo (or Ahmed, but they tend to skew older) could definitely fill that slot this year.

There was actually two last year: Banderas in Pain and Glory and Pryce in The Two Popes.

I think Lindo will for sure be nominated. He had an absolutely towering performance that’s probably the runner-up to win (unless Kaluuya goes lead and really delivers). It doesn’t matter if Da Five Bloods underperforms: the buzz around that film is all surrounding Lindo, just like Kirby in Pieces of a Woman.

And it’s silly to think that Lindo will be snubbed because of his characters politics? I mean, really? Lindo’s character is definetely not one we’re supposed to sympathize with. And they just gave fucking Joker the win last year! Psychopathic Clown Murderer < Trump Supporter.

If there’s no buzz for Da 5 Bloods, why are experts still talking about it? I’m beginning to think people are actively rooting for it to fail.

Da Five Bloods does have buzz, but it’s all surrounding Lindo. I think it can squeak into Original Screenplay, but Director and Picture are unlikely. Netflix can only get three noms max in Picture and Mank + Chicago 7 are already locked, so the 3rd will be Hillbilly Elegy or Ma Rainey. And Da Five Bloods won’t get Director without Picture.

As for the techs, none of the technical aspects of the film were praised at all. In fact, the score and editing were directly criticized by critics and audiences. So I doubt this film gets any tech noms.

Well Chicago 7 isn’t really a Best Picture player anymore. It’s an Original Screenplay + Editing contender at most. The Best Picture race has already boiled down to Nomadland vs Mank.

Is there a rule preventing a studio from having more than three films for Best Picture?

I think comparing the Trial of the Chicago 74 to Green Book doesn’t scan. If anything, this years Green Book is going to be Hillbilly Elegy.

    • Politically controversial based on source material
    • Also populist mainstream friendly material
    • A likely winner of a Supporting acting category
    • Will get some brutal thinkpieces From critics
    • Will benefit from the backlash to the backlash a lot

Please…just because you’re not excited to watch a movie doesn’t mean other people aren’t.
