Da 5 Bloods is DOA. When will people realize this?

I don’t know why it took me so long to respond to this, but in a year where so many major contedners are being delayed, a critically-acclaimed film from an Academy-Award winner director and writer cannot just be written off. Netflix could easily get 4 films into the top categories this year.

I agree it can’t just be written off, but I am very confident it has little chance in basically all categories outside of Actor. There are more than enough movies to fill in the nominations, a June release is already early but now this year is extended making it even earlier, and the film doesn’t have the best audience reviews. Lindo will be in the conversation but that’s about it.

Have a great day if you see this!

In a year where the Oscars are in the Spring, what a flop. But then again, at best it’ll get Globe noms and Oscar noms for Murray and Screenplay.

I wasn’t sure about French Exit getting enough visibility to get Micheke Pfeffer a nom, but since it’s closing NYFF I guess that won’t be a problem. Besides, wins like Renee have proven that you don’t need any other Oscar noms to do well in Best Actress: just a strong performance.

I actually think it could potentially break into Adapted Screenplay, but yeah Actress would likely be what it’s really in contention for. Supporting Actor is extremely weak this year though, I’m not sure how big Hedge’s role is but maybe this could be a Wild situation where it gets Actress and Supporting Actress (Actor in this case).

I agree with this. I think a lot of us (I know I was) were expecting it to make a huge splash when it debuted on Netflix, especially since it was around the height of the BLM movement/protests, but it kind of just came and went. And yes, it’s audience scores aren’t good either. I think Lindo is probably a lock because he’ll have critics backing him towards the end of the year but I’m not confident in predicting it in any other categories.

Exactly my sentiments. It can’t just so easily be ignored when we can have as many as 10 BP nominees (most likely 9 at most but you get the idea).

Lucas Hedges is a previous Oscar nominee, and the Supporting Oscar field is weak rn, so yeah, I guess we’ll see.

People who are predicting West Side Story will do really well at the Oscars: I genuinely do not see what would make a remake of West Side Story more urgent than Da 5 Bloods. And to think Da 5 Bloods won’t get a single tech nominations makes me think some people want the movie to fail. Please keep your emotions out of this.

What technicals do you think it can get into? I’m genuinely curious because even BlacKkKlansman which was way stronger than Da 5 Bloods only managed to get editing and score outside the main categories.

Delroy Lindo is the film’s strongest bet at a nomination and perhaps a win. But, unless Netflix makes Da 5 Bloods their top priority I don’t think it’s realistic to say the movie will do well in the technical categories.

I think it could get an editing nom again. Probably not score, since that was one of the main complaints a lot of people had with the film (even though I really liked it).

Also, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won’t be double nominated: they’re not at John Williams/Hans Zimmer/Thomas Newman status yet. Soul’s nomination ceiling is Best Animated Feature and Best Original Screenplay, and the latter will only happen if the film reviews as well as Inside Out or better.
