It’s funny how the fifth nominee for this category is a bigger mystery than the movie that will actually win.

This is actually one of the weaker years for animated features with so many being underwhleming and we can’t even fill up the top 5 with real strong contenders atm.

That doesn’t mean that top 4 are bad. In my opinion, these are all great (not good, not ok, not alright, GREAT) films.

And there’s a chance that the whole top 5 can be great like it was in 2009 if the Academy makes the right choice. I heard Inu-Oh is good.

It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

What a great year for this category, whew.

On paper, maybe. There were 3 movies with really great reviews, Del Toro’s Pinocchio, Turning Red and Marcel the Shell With Shoes on.

But at the same time, some movies were kind of disappointing, like maybe My Father’s Dragon and Wendell & Wild. Both of those movies seemed like surefire nominations before they came out.

I don’t know how one would say it’s a good year for animated features or not.

I have heard arguments for 2009 being really great. Up, Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Secret of Kells, The Princess and the Frog. Even others that didn’t get nominated.

I think Wendell & Wild makes it across the line, just due to visibility on Netflix and Henry Selick’s name recognition, if not that, then My Father’s Dragon due to Netflix and Cartoon Saloon name recognition

Minions will definitely miss at the Oscars. It probably just got in because it made over $900 million worldwide and the 5th spot is not clear. The other four movies are obviously locked in for the nomination.

I’m quite fond of Minions: The Rise of Gru, but also—and it surprises me that most don’t point this out—Best Animated Feature at PGA is like the yearly AFI list—just the American productions.

That doesn’t mean that top 4 are bad. In my opinion, these are all great (not good, not ok, not alright, GREAT) films.

And there’s a chance that the whole top 5 can be great like it was in 2009 if the Academy makes the right choice. I heard Inu-Oh is good.

Inu-oh is fabulous. I still remember the moment in the theater when I realized what the film was an allegory for. All I care about at this point is that it gets the opportunity to lose the Best Animated Feature Oscar. (PLEASE don’t F up, GKIDS.)

Inu-oh and Apollo 10 1/2 are the only two animated films in my 4-star tier for 2022. Then, in my 3.5-star tier, I have The Bad Guys, Marcel TSWSO, Eternal Spring, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

Help me manifest this Best Original Song category at the 95th Oscars!:
(contenders as of end of November)

    "Dragon Commander" (Inu-oh)
    "Good Tonight" (The Bad Guys)
"Hold My Hand" (Top Gun: Maverick)
"Lucky Ducks" (The Bob's Burgers Movie)
"Naatu Naatu" (RRR: Rise, Roar, Revolt)

If Inu-Oh doesn’t get nominated, I’m going to start thinking the Academy has something against Japanese animators.

Unless their name is “Hayao Miyazaki” or the studio is “Studio Ghibli”, of course.

Goodness, even Mamoru Hosoda’s Mirai from 2018 only managed the nom because GKIDS most likely had to choose between it and Masaaki Yuasa’s The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl (the superior film, TBH).

Since then, Yuasa’s Ride Your Wave barely made an impression at the start of 2020, well before C19, whereas people thought Hosoda’s Belle from late 2021 would have a shot, but nope.

GKIDS has ONE JOB in trying to get Inu-oh into Best Animated Feature 2022. One job, that’s all.

Flee became the designated foreign/indie animated critical darling last year.

All of the academy votes on nominations for this category. It used to be just the animation branch, though.

thank you for the reply. I was asking because I was worried if it was just the animated branch that they would snub Marcel due to the “live action” aspects of the film, despite meeting Academy requirements.

I don’t understand how Wendell & Wild got nominated for the Critics Choice Awards when there were other animated movies with better reviews that didn’t get in.

Well I mean part of the reason is the critics choice awards isn’t exactly reflective of whatever you find on rottentomatoes in aggregate. I’ve heard they try to be predictive in their picks but IDK.
