Puss in Boots really is getting great reviews on Letterboxd. Added it to my predictions.
Strange World looking less likely by the day.
It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!
November 26, 2022 at 4:40 pm #1205167560new prediction
Winner: Turning Red
nominees
Del Toro’s Pinocchio
Wendell & Wild
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
My Father’s Dragon
November 26, 2022 at 4:53 pm #1205167564might help turning red if 100% of the disney vote is concentrated on one film.
even a 3-way split didn’t stop encanto this year, but with the timing and the buzziness it was the obvious choice for the studio that generally wins. factors that turning red doesn’t have this time as a march release.
November 26, 2022 at 6:03 pm #1205167612Actually come to think of it, what were most people predicting last year for this Category? Was Encanto the obviously expected winner?
November 26, 2022 at 6:25 pm #1205167626Not until it exploded on Disney+ and went viral all over tiktok and such. Before that, it was just a movie with ok box office and good not great reviews.

IIRC, Luca was the frontrunner until Encanto won the Globe.

Winner: Turning Red
nominees
Del Toro’s Pinocchio
Wendell & Wild
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
My Father’s Dragon
Haven’t Wendell & Wild and My Father’s Dragon merely met average expectations?

Not The Mitchells vs. the Machines?
Help me manifest this Best Original Song category at the 95th Oscars!:
(contenders as of end of November)

"Dragon Commander" (Inu-oh)
"Good Tonight" (The Bad Guys)
"Hold My Hand" (Top Gun: Maverick)
"Lucky Ducks" (The Bob's Burgers Movie)
"Naatu Naatu" (RRR: Rise, Roar, Revolt)November 26, 2022 at 7:28 pm #1205167690Haven’t Wendell & Wild and My Father’s Dragon merely met average expectations?
Sure but I still don’t think Inu-Oh or Marcel the Shell will get in.
November 26, 2022 at 7:29 pm #1205167692IIRC, Luca was the frontrunner until Encanto won the Globe.
Would have thought Mitchells vs. the Machines had a better chance than Luca.

Unfortunately, no. The Mitchells vs the Machines was never the frontrunner. I know because I was championing it the whole damn year, lol.
It never got out of underdog status, even when it swept the Annie Awards.

well thanks for the information.
Mitchells I guess had more critics on its side though. Won the NYFCC award for animated film.
Luca didn’t really capture any major awards, I think.

Just looked at last year’s thread to double check.
Yeah, Luca was the frontrunner for most of the season. Then people got really excited about Flee. Then the critics awards started and for a brief moment some people started to think of Mitchells as a potential winner, but then the Globe went to Encanto and the rest is history.

clayton was saying that encanto could be nominated to best picture like toy story 3 or up but luca has not chance. Like people is saying this year that pinocchio could be nominated to best picture
November 26, 2022 at 10:12 pm #1205167861Not The Mitchells vs. the Machines?
the mitchells vs the machines wasn’t nominated to best animated film in the golden globe last year and no movie has won best animated film in the oscars without being nominated to the golden globe equivalent. So people were debating if the mitchells vs the machines chances were dead based on if the golden globe were trully 100% canceled as a precursor or not
November 26, 2022 at 10:23 pm #1205167869I wonder if Netflix might try to somehow torpedo Wendell & Wild and My Father’s Dragon in an attempt to ensure they only have GDT’s Pinocchio in the lineup to maximize their shot at winning.
Disney had three different films in the lineup last year and Netflix still couldn’t beat them even though their film had a filmmaker protagonist, won dozens of critics awards, and even swept the Annies!
Wait, why is GDT’s Pinocchio seen a done-deal again?
