I wonder if Netflix might try to somehow torpedo Wendell & Wild and My Father’s Dragon in an attempt to ensure they only have GDT’s Pinocchio in the lineup to maximize their shot at winning.
Disney had three different films in the lineup last year and Netflix still couldn’t beat them even though their film had a filmmaker protagonist, won dozens of critics awards, and even swept the Annies!
Wait, why is GDT’s Pinocchio seen a done-deal again?
Tbh, there’s no way an animated film will make it into Best Picture again unless it’s an undeniable theatrical monster.
Help me manifest this Best Original Song category at the 95th Oscars!:
(contenders as of end of November)

"Dragon Commander" (Inu-oh)
"Good Tonight" (The Bad Guys)
"Hold My Hand" (Top Gun: Maverick)
"Lucky Ducks" (The Bob's Burgers Movie)
"Naatu Naatu" (RRR: Rise, Roar, Revolt)November 26, 2022 at 10:57 pm #1205167894Tbh, there’s no way an animated film will make it into Best Picture again unless it’s an undeniable theatrical monster.
Having seen the film, I highly doubt GDT’s Pinocchio will get a Best Picture nomination
If GDT’s Pinocchio premieres on Netflix at number 1 and holds that position for several weeks, if it gets a nomination for Globes Picture Musical/Comedy, and/or if it makes PGA, then I’ll reconsider my position.
Until then, I don’t see it happening.
If it was nominated for picture without any of the things I mentioned above happening, I would start to think Guillermo del Toro has dirt on Academy members.

It cannot be in that category at the globes. They changed the rules when they made an animated feature category.
Animated features cannot be in drama or musical/comedy category.
That said I don’t really factor in the Globes for much…

They changed the rules again.
Per the official HFPA consideration rules (published September 30th, 2022)
11. c. “Animated motion pictures are also eligible for the Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy awards but are not eligible for the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language award”
So yeah, it’s eligible this year. I had to check because GDT’s Pinocchio is an option in the prediction center.

Interesting…
animated features like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Toy Story 2 won the Comedy/Musical category before. Before there was an animated feature category.
And others like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles have been nominated.
Wonder if Disney wants to try that again too.
Don’t think they’ll ever try for the drama category because animated features are considered less serious inherently though. And everything Disney makes has some levity in it anyways.
November 27, 2022 at 6:21 am #1205168047I watched Del Toro’s Pinocchio this week too and I think I agree this is not getting into Picture, but it could I guess.
I definetely think it will be a player in other categories such as Score and Song, and maybe Visual Effects as well.
The movie is gorgeous and before watching it I thought it was a race between it and Turning Red, but now I truly think Pinocchio has it with ease. And I say this as a Turning Red stan! I’m sorry, but Pinocchio just screams Oscar winner.
It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

If that happens then GKIDS may have one of their movies nominated (Inu-Oh, Unicorn Wars, etc), and Marcel gets a bigger chance to enter the category.

GDT, that’s it.

November 27, 2022 at 2:30 pm #1205168378Strange World was astonishingly bad. Maybe the second worst of the masterpieces collection only behind Chicken Little. I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s only Turning Red for Disney.
For Your Consideration:
The Banshees of Inisherin in ALL categories, including:
- Best Picture
- Best Director
- Best Actor (Colin Farrell)
- Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson)
- Best Supporting Actor (Barry Keoghan)
- Best Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon)
- Best Supporting Actress (Sheila Flitton)

November 27, 2022 at 4:34 pm #1205168469I’m going to base my Oscar predictions on the winners of National Board of Review, NYFCC, and LAFCA animated feature awards.
If Pinocchio wins two or all three of them I’ll think it wins the Oscar.

i think is most probably turning red and bob’s burger, since bob’s burger is a very good movie

that’s a weird comparative. Bob’s burger movie is very good and the simpson movie was mediocre
November 27, 2022 at 8:10 pm #1205168696The Academy is known to shun films that serve as commercials for established brands in the animated feature category.
If you’re some kind of “The _____ Movie”, chances are you’re not getting nominated.
