I think this is the category that’s locked at this point. Pinocchio is winning and it’s not even close.

Yup. It’s done. But hey, we made it to 500 posts so it was a good season for animated feature.
And I think the Guilds have even clarified what that 5th spot probably is.

What do you think will take the 5th spot?

Lightyear, believe it or not.
January 10, 2023 at 11:50 pm #1205234399Inu-oh got that Golden Globe nomination, but it would be difficult to get in the Oscar lineup. I am pretty sure some other trashy film is going to get that last slot.
It would be an atrocity if anything below Puss in Boots gets a nomination.
Lightyear is coming. 🤮
January 10, 2023 at 11:52 pm #1205234403I think Best Animated Feature and Best Supporting Actor are biggest locks.
January 11, 2023 at 12:41 am #1205234460I agree on Marcel, but Puss has a far superior screenplay to all other three imo. The worst aspect of The Bad Guys is its writing.
I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree here. I’m partial to The Bad Guys’ family-friendly exploration of living morally, especially in its 3rd act.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has a solid script, but it’s not as polished in the multiple villains department, sometimes defaulting to kiddie amusement to get us to the next beat. I’d even go so far as to argue that the novelty of poking fun at fairy tales, going back to parent franchise Shrek, felt stale and tacked-on now in The Last Wish.
Screenplay is definitely not what makes Apollo and Marcel special/great, and I don’t even want to start on the latter two.
Humor me, then, since I’d personally nominate the first 3 for their respective Best Screenplay categories.
Help me manifest this Best Original Song category at the 95th Oscars!:
(contenders as of end of November)

"Dragon Commander" (Inu-oh)
"Good Tonight" (The Bad Guys)
"Hold My Hand" (Top Gun: Maverick)
"Lucky Ducks" (The Bob's Burgers Movie)
"Naatu Naatu" (RRR: Rise, Roar, Revolt)January 11, 2023 at 2:07 am #1205234515If Pinocchio wins, we can lay the “animated films are not just about the animation, they are real films” argument to rest. A film lacking in story, acting and pathos … if it wins, no one can argue that animation is on par with live action. It will continue to be purely about the visuals.
Here for the comedies

Pure delusional thinking. If the Academy gatekeeps international animated films and awards animated films with big names attached to it, that just goes to show their own mediocre taste. Last year they awarded fucking Encanto, when they easily could have given it to Flee. The year before that, they should have given it to Wolfwalkers but they gave it to Soul. Most of them are just boring, uninspired and predictable choices. The most deserving winner was back in 2002. Watch some Satoshi Kon films before making that statement.January 11, 2023 at 5:24 am #1205234801<p style=”text-align: left;”> </p> Pure delusional thinking. I think we agree then? I was talking about the reddit argument that nominated animated features should be considered on par with live action films and that animation is merely a visual medium for adults, not a genre and not for kids. Which i think could be the case, but Disney fetish and a Pinocchio win complete dispute that.

Oops sorry. I thought you were supporting “animation is for kids” statement. My bad, i read it wrong. 😅
