I didn’t know there was such a thing as a midseason movie award. This practically assures Turning Red is winning BAF.

Well it’s just a thing that Hollywood Film Critics Association does. I wouldn’t go as far as say it’s locked to win the Oscar, but given that it’s a Pixar movie distributed by Disney, it’s likely.

    Turning Red
    Pinocchio (Del Toro)
    Wendell & Wild
    My Father’s Dragon
    Inu-Oh

My prediction for nominees. With Turning Red as frontrunner.

edit: just realized my predictions haven’t changed in the past three weeks.

What variety thinks at this point. My main takeaway is that Marcel counts as animated.

    “Lightyear” (Pixar)
    Angus MacLane, Galyn Susman
    “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” (Netflix)***
Guillermo del Toro, Alexander Bulkley, Corey Campodonico, Lisa Henson, Gary Ungar
“Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” (A24)
Dean Fleischer-Camp, Andrew Goldman, Elisabeth Holm, Caroline Kaplan, Terry Leonard, Paul Mezey
    “Turning Red” (Pixar)
    Domee Shi, Lindsey Collins
    “Wendell and Wild” (Netflix)
Henry Selick, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jordan Peele

It seems like Marcel will be the default indie animated nomination next year. How accurate has Variety been with these predictions?

I don’t know. The people here don’t think that the author of this piece is very accurate though.

Looking at what the author predicted for the Song category, the whole thing just looks sloppy.

Darling, predicting this category, be sure to save one slot in your prediction for a random, indie 2D animation movie that no one had seen.

    FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All At Once
    Tang Wei, Decision To Leave

James Hong & Jamie Lee Curtis, Everything Everywhere All At Once

the Sea Beast is at 82 on Metacritic (had a theatre run last week and out on Netflix this month I think)

Thinking I don’t know that? It’s usually by Cartoon Saloon. My Father’s Dragon is it this year.

Well there are many bad reviews for it, as it’s 71% on rottentomatoes.

Illumination animation has only been nominated once, for Despicable Me 2, so the chances are slim.

If Marcel the Shell With Shoes counts, this is my prediction:

    1. Turning Red

    2. Pinocchio (Del Toro)

    3. Wendell & Wild

    4. Marcel the Shell With Shoes

    5. My Father’s Dragon

In order of likeliness of winning.

I wonder what happened to GKIDS that they haven’t had much luck getting movies nominated recently. Did they just give up?

Well, Wolfwalkers was distributed by them.

I guess it’s just dependent on the movies they can get their hands on. They’re a distributor, not a production company.

    That said, Inu-Oh looks cool.

That was mainly an Apple release though. I’m still shocked Belle was snubbed; that one was a shoo-in for a nomination. Was it the January release date?

Could be. It was eligible and it was submitted for consideration, though. It was just passed over.

The Disney pull of Encanto, Raya, (and the Pixar film Luca) I guess crowded it out. Flee and Mitchells were critically acclaimed too.
