Here’s “Naatu Naatu” by itself. Just the song. No dance sequence. Still good, but not quite as interesting, right?

I agree, the choreography and dance sequence eats the song, it has a good rythm but I can’t judge the lyrics which should be the main concern of this category.

Here’s a link for the English translation of “Naatu Naatu”: https://www.lyricstranslation.in/2021/11/naatu-naatu-lyrics-english-translation.html

And for comparison, here’s the same for “Dosti” (sans second verse because it’s not in the music video): https://www.lyricstranslation.in/2021/07/dosti-lyrics-in-english-translation-telugu.html

Help me manifest this Best Original Song category at the 95th Oscars!:
(contenders as of end of November)

    "Dragon Commander" (Inu-oh)
    "Good Tonight" (The Bad Guys)
"Hold My Hand" (Top Gun: Maverick)
"Lucky Ducks" (The Bob's Burgers Movie)
"Naatu Naatu" (RRR: Rise, Roar, Revolt)

My 2 microns in a world that is far from ideal:

Nobody Like U, Billie Eilish/Phinneas, Turning Red
Naatu Naatu, Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, RRR (or Dosti, RRR)
Hold My Hand, Lady Gaga, Top Gun: Maverick
Lift Me Up, Rihanna, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Stand Up, Jazmine Sullivan featuring D’Mile, Till
Carolina, Taylor Swift, Where the Crawdads Sing

This award is Gaga’s to lose.

A quick commentary on some of the songs before I cut to the chase: “Nobody Like U” & “Naatu Naatu” have similar chances in my opinion. “Stand Up” by Jazmine Sullivan seems like a surefire nominee. I think “Vegas” will be deemed ineligible but it definitely deserves a nomination in my opinion.

I’m obviously wishing “Carolina” somehow makes it in since it’s poetic and decent melodically and also because she won’t stop jumping on these poor films until she gets a goddamn Oscar.

As for the big 2… I adore both of these ladies. I’ve never been a fan of “Hold My Hand” which is surprising to me cause I’m obsessed with the A Star Is Born soundtrack (and especially the underappreciated “Before I Cry”, which sort of sounds like HMH to me). So I thought that there would be stronger songs by this time of year. Spoiler: there are not.

I had the highest expectations for “Lift Me Up” but I simply can’t see it doing anything. I might make a fool of myself come March but I believe Gaga is the strongest contender and also the film was a critical and commercial behemoth.

Wow just heard the HMMA-winning song from GDT’s Pinocchio, “Ciao Papa“, and it is so beautiful. Considering the film is gonna sweep the animated feature category, the song has strong chances to get in. Remember: Ususally, 4 or all nominees would show up on HMMA nomination list every year.

    So right now I’m having:
    1. Hold My Hand /TGM (lock)
    2. Lift Me Up /WF (lock)
    3. Ciao Papa /GDT’s Pinocchio

    Others contenders:
    4. Keep Rising /The Woman King (Not sure if this is eligible)
    5. Stand Up /Till (Pros: message song from a BP-contending film ; Cons: the song sounds ordinary and forgettable)
    6. Applause /Tell it Like a Woman (Pros: Diane Warren; Cons: Sounds basic and too pop)
    7. The Songchord /Avatar (not yet released)
    8. Nobody Like U /Turning Red (Pros: film is doing really well ; Cons: sounds too pop…the “Just Look Up” situation…)
    9. Time /Amsterdam (Pros: song itself is brilliant ; Cons: film is a disaster)

I’d be shocked if “Ciao Papa” missed.

Academy favorites Alexandre Desplat and Guillermo del Toro are both credited as songwriters and we frequently get songs from Animated Features in this category.

Plus, as you mentioned, it’s a beautiful song.

Finally I see someone talk positively about Ciao Papa. I’ve only read negative things about it so far and felt like I wasn’t getting something. Beautiful song, also ties into the movie thematically. Should be a surefire nomination in a perfect world. As of now I don’t have it in.

    For Your Consideration:
The Banshees of Inisherin in ALL categories, including:
    - Best Picture
    - Best Director
    - Best Actor (Colin Farrell)
    - Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson)
    - Best Supporting Actor (Barry Keoghan)
    - Best Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon)
    - Best Supporting Actress (Sheila Flitton)
    - Best Original Screenplay

Hold my hand is a good record. It’s just that…A Star Is Born soundtrack is top tier so Hold My Hand is a bit of a let down compared to Shallows, ARUTW and INLA.

Not sure it’s fair to compare HMH to anything on ASIB. HMH was a one-off song for a movie she had no interaction with or part in, whereas ASIB was treated as an entire project for her.

    Fair enough

True, ASIB songs are just on another level, but they had a key role in the movie, whereas HMH is just an end credit song, it did what it had to do for a movie like Top Gun.
