Naatu Naatu coming in and stomping on songs from massive movies and popstars would be kind of iconic.
December 10, 2022 at 6:55 pm #1205186973It would be pretty amazing to see that performance on stage to a worldwide audience. And chances are getting stronger….the songwriter branch only nominates, right?
Winning might be trickier since all academy members vote but it is on track for a nod.
December 10, 2022 at 7:17 pm #1205186983I also think we’re underestimating Naatu Naatu. Rajamouli won Best director at the New York critics award and NBR ranked RRR in their list. Kinda bummed that this could’be been our easy win but the internal politics of our country’s committee jumped out. But seeing RRR making it to the general categories is giving me so much hope. So as of now I think Hold my hand, lift me up and Naatu Naatu are kinda locked for Noms. And Ram and NTR will put up a mind blowing performance easily. They’re so talented!
Stop reading tabloids and go watch the actual submission. After the failure of Devdas, the Indian jury has gravitated towards promoting smaller more independent auteur projects than large scale massy ones. RRR falls into the latter category. It’s a mass appealing action film. Which country on Earth submits films like these? It’s just so easy to read non credible newspapers that thrive on rumours and the North-South Divide to garner more clicks. The actual submission, I.e., Chello Show is an excellent excellent film. Kindly go watch it before screaming “internal politics”. It’s a Gujarati film. Had internal politics been an issue, Soorarai Pottru wouldn’t have swept the prestigious National Awards. And let’s not pretend masses and critics love RRR more than they loved Eega or Bahubali:The Beginning.
Just recently the jury received a lot of criticism for not submitting Tumbbad and going for a mainstream film. This time they’re rectifying the error.

It winning would he really inspired because it would be such a step away from the usual end credit namecheck songs that have no role in their films

I think at least 17 of the past 22 winners this decade are not end credit songs. This is a myth peddled out every year that is used to try to invalidate best original song nominees and to make analysis of this category feel sophisticated.
There’s nothing inspiring about that happening, it’s what happens a majority of the time…

It’s more because of the last winners i think. Granted, No Time To Die was used quite well, but it was still an opening credits song. Then you have Fight For You and I’m Gonna Love Me Again…
I always liked this category because it was where songwriters could pull it off a song in a scene that becomes essencial to the movie. Like the Shallow scene, the Let it Go scene (even though I hate that song), the Remember Me scene. Even songs that don’t have THE scene can still say a lot about the movie they’re in (City of Stars) are indeed a thing the Academy should reward. But since Shallow this category has not been it, and Naatu Naatu could just be the song that makes that special feeling come back (i did love the sequence).

I’m not all bringing in the north south issue! The internal politics I’m talking about is trying to avoid backlash by submitting films that are going to go nowhere. While I know the Chello Show is a very great film even better than RRR, the latter “mass appealing action film” is the one getting all the praise from the critics and getting nominated and winning the critic awards and not the submitted one. I’m just asking the committee to be intelligent.

Doja’s song being ineligible opens up the 4th spot. It should be noted that both Discussingfilms and Las Vegas one had the same set of nominations!
December 11, 2022 at 12:46 am #1205187375How i see it as of now (likelihood of NOM, not win)
1. Hold My Hand
2. Lift Me Up
3. Naatu Naatu
4. Nothing is Lost, Avatar (this could easily be dropped, let’s see how it’s received)
5. Random Diane Warren song that she makes every year and never win and i never know the name of it.FYC:

“Dosti” is more essential to RRR than “Naatu Naatu” and “Take a Look at Us Now” is more essential to Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile than the depressing “Carried Away”.
Yet neither “Dosti” nor “Take a Look at Us Now” can compete because neither were submitted, despite the undeniable importance of both to their respective films.
And, as I dreaded, Disney only submitted the fun but obligatory song-for-series-noobs “Sunny Side-Up Summer” from The Bob’s Burgers Movie and not the far more impressive “Lucky Ducks”.
That’s objectively DISGUSTING.

I’m not kept it up with best picture race, wondering if between the three big conteders (Rihanna, Gaga and Weeknd), can the one with best picture nomination attachment being favoured and vice versa in this category?
