The Academy did check out both him & Ray Charles once each. 😉
February 9, 2023 at 2:30 am #1205297881My rankings:
1. “Naatu Naatu”: Despite its not being in English & RRR getting no other nominations, its viral status (without getting spanked by its studio unlike “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”), its precursor wins (especially both GG & CC), and its being filmed at the Ukrainian presidential palace just months before the Russian invasion keep it on top. (Won’t help its chances, but expect a surprise intro by Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the Oscarcast.)
2. “Lift Me Up”: Though a weak song with no BP nom backing, IMO the push for Angela Bassett to win will help more than hurt, and Rihanna has a unique opportunity to promote it as the Super Bowl halftime headliner. (Phil Collins’ Super Bowl performance was before the noms were announced; he sang “Two Worlds” there instead of “You’ll Be In My Heart”.)
3. “Hold My Hand”: Though it may be the strongest song of the bunch & TGM is a BP nominee, Lady Gaga has BOS already & is more interested in Best Actress nowadays, which shows in her lack of promotion for this song. Paramount’s ad at the Grammys may not be enough even if repeated at the Super Bowl.
4. “This Is A Life”: Though EEAAO is a BP nominee, to the typical Academy voter all it has going for it is that & David Byrne’s 35-year-old scoring Oscar for The Last Emperor. I’m more interested in the so far UK-only 4K Blu-ray release of The Last Emperor (this coming Monday) than this song.
5. “Applause”: Diane Warren may now have an honorary Oscar, but that won’t win her any sympathy with general Academy voters who’ve snubbed her 13 times before. Her best shot at redemption is next year for her 80 for Brady song; Charlie Chaplin, Henry Fonda & Paul Newman all won their only competitive Oscars the year after winning an honorary one (in Chaplin’s case his second).February 9, 2023 at 4:48 am #1205297909My rankings:

I prefer my roses whiteFebruary 9, 2023 at 4:55 am #1205297911Hi reading through this thread, very interesting views. I’m new here and just wanted to share my thoughts on the Best Original Song race.
Nautu Nautu is a slam-dunk win, over 50% 0f Academy voters is now overseas members who have demonstrated greater appreciation for non-English films (Parasite, Minari, Drive My Car…) and are eager to extend this to Song.
Domestically, I’d imagine great enthusiasm for Life Me Up — Göransson is a celebrated in Score and Rihanna is a treasure. Her upcoming Super Bowl will certainly boost her chances. However, I don’t think she has that strong of an edge against the other English-song nominees who will likely split votes. After collecting the Critics Choice and Golden Globe it will rank highly on ballots, being voters de-facto second choice.
Therefore it is with great confidence I can see the song glorious on Oscars night.
February 9, 2023 at 5:56 am #1205297946Billboard: Will Rihanna Seize the Perfect Oscar Timing & Perform ‘Lift Me Up’ at Super Bowl?
While it’s not yet known if “Lift Me Up” will be in Rihanna’s setlist during her halftime show, it’s very likely that it will be. You don’t get to be one of the biggest music stars on the planet without seizing golden opportunities. If Rihanna does perform the song during her set, this will amount to the most-viewed “For Your Consideration” ad of all time.
The annual Oscar nominees luncheon is set for Monday, Feb. 13, the day after the Super Bowl. Final-round voting extends from March 2 at 9 a.m. PT to March 7 at 5 p.m. PT.

They wouldn’t risk this. Doing this would be met with very harsh and critical reactions back in their home country. Russophilia runs deep in India among all sections of Indian society.
