Netflix had two nominees, Viola Davis and Vanessa Kirby, last year. It’s not hard. De Armas is definitely getting nominated but Regina is going to be a frontrunner to win. It’s Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady, and Michelle Williams, My Week With Marilyn all over again. Lol

Not exactly if Blonde is exactly what it’s rumored. It will be one of those films which in a domestic theatrical release would have a D or worse a F Cinemascore rating. De Armas would need the full support of the critics to stay alive. Stewart probably got that nom as 5th place by the sink of her teeth.

We use the word “overdue” so much around here that the true meaning has been lost. MICHELLE YEOH is overdue for an Oscar nomination.

She should have been nominated for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (and Zhang Ziyi too)

Context is key. In 2011 Aung was still considered the symbol of freedom and democracy for Myanmar and a respected Nobel Prize winner. When the film was made and released it has all the logic to have a biopic about that “trailbrazzer” fighter. 10 years later, it’s different. But the film hasn’t any fault to exist in a different timeline with a full different context. Of course, now it will essential to mention the post legacy of 10 years after the release.

Genocide isn’t the only reason a piece of political hagiography where (because Hollywood thinks all Asian woman look the same) a Chinese Malay actress was cast in the role of a Burmese woman should never have been made.

I’m sorry but why are we having these political discussions about a film from 2011 in the 2023 Oscars contenders thread.

Because this is a forum board where people are allowed to freely offer an alternative opinion on a discussion point that was started by another user, is it not?

Anyway I don’t have any more contributions to this discussion.

Pathetic. Anne Thompson needs to issue an apology for this subtle racism, which shouldn’t be considered a “silly mistake”. Newsflash, Asian actors are in fact different.

In terms of confidence in the nomination:

    Picture

    1. Killers of the Flower Moon
    2. The Fabelmans
    3. Babylon
    4. Women Talking
    5. She Said
    6. Empire of Light
    7. The Son
    8. White Noise
    9. Bardo
    10. Poor Things

KOTFM I’m totally confident in, The Fabelmans almost on the same level of confidence. I’m not sure of anything else but just based on what we know now and the total nom hauls I could see each getting this feels about right. I wasn’t going to predict Poor Things but reading around and thinking about the material in Lanthimos’ hands I think he could have another hit. Decision to Leave would be in 11th – waiting to hear more on it, though.

    Director

    1. Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon
    2. Spielberg, The Fabelmans
    3. Polley, Women Talking
    4. Inarritu, Bardo
    5. Schrader, She Said

I think Polley may well end up winning this but I’m obviously more confident in Scorsese and Spielberg securing noms right now.

He said in the replies that it’s not Lynch. I took a shot in the dark and guessed Barry Levinson.

Darling, the best picture race is over.

This will be the fourth film to sweep the top 5 Oscars.

    FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All At Once
    Tang Wei, Decision To Leave
    Rebecca Hall, Resurrection

James Hong & Jamie Lee Curtis, Everything Everywhere All At Once
