Colin Farrell’s work in Banshees of Inisherin is so deeply complex as he wrestles with restraint, regret, pensiveness, confusion, and humor. It’s a performance that contains so many layers and Farrell’s face work (eyebrows!) is deeply sympathetic. It’s a subtle performance, but is perhaps the most demanding out of everyone in the race; reminds me a lot of Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea.

Iconic. Give this man’s eyebrows an Oscar already 👏

It’s the most affecting lead actor performance I’ve seen so far this year next to Colin Farrell.
A subtle, honest performance that’s heartbreaking by the film’s end

Darling, you’ll love it. Colin Farrell and his donkey has the best chemistry of the year.

November 7, 2022 at 1:11 pm #1205144512I’m curious about Mescal’s chances. He’s a great actor and will certainly have some critics push… However, “Aftersun” (regardless of how good Mescal and the film are) has very little buzz in Hollywood right now. There are no screenings for it and very little ad buys… If they really want him in the race, they need to amp up that campaign stat.
I agree it doesn’t seem like A24 is putting that much effort into a campaign, but critics are still raving about it, and during the awards season press cycle critics are going to a lot of festivals and talking to a lot of industry folks and telling them what they should see first. I don’t think we’ll see any real proof of a campaign for Mescal until he starts racking up critics awards. Especially if he wins a few of the big ones over Fraser, I’ll be very interested to see how A24 handles that.

November 8, 2022 at 5:50 am #1205145176Having seen The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, and The Whale, the Butler fans and the Farrell fans here ought to come around understanding that Fraser will be sweeping because he is that damn good.
Now don’t get me wrong, I think Butler, Farrell, and Fraser are all brilliant. I’ll happily welcome a win for any of those three. Glad that, despite how weak this field is otherwise, we have a robust top three in them.

I must have missed his scene in Banshees of Inisherin.

Imo it’s the closest thing to a lock we have in one of the acting races this year. The Whale is not critically raved, but people who like it LOVE it. It’s a passion pick and will surely get into Best Picture. This is not Ma Rainey, I think.
