Did you guys honestly love Gleeson though? Man, I have to be honest, he was the weakest link of the core 4. It wasn’t bad, but given his moody and grumpy character, it just wasn’t enough for me to ever warrant a nomination in either field for him. I get that’s how his character was written, but still page to screen, it really was such a dry and unmoved performance.

    Gleeson gives a quieter less showy performance (which is something to say considering the character’s ACTIONS in the movie!) (; He is superb and it really is a two lead movie. The movie is about the dissolution of a friendship between an older and a younger man in an Irish village on a remote island – they are the leads! The supporting roles are Siobhan, Dominic and the old crone! (;

I thought Brendan Gleeson expertly portrayed Colm Doherty as an artist suffering from mental illness desperately trying to keep his s**t together.

He’s a broken man who just wants to find meaning and peace as the thought of mortality plagues him and magnifies all the cracks. He is menacing, always on the verge of exploding, but deep down also wishes to be a kind man, so he focuses his aggression inward. Gleeson is able to convey the character’s internal struggles brilliantly.

    But that’s just my opinion

I saw that The Whale is coming out this weekend. I am having such a curious reaction this news: I will reluctantly go to see it because Fraser is the frontrunner but I really don’t want to see this movie! I really don’t find it at all appealing – it’s trailer and it’s premise. Perhaps I will enjoy it but this is one that I really am dragging myself to see simply because of Fraser’s frontrunner status. (Conversely I am looking forward to Empire of Light because I love and adore Olivia Colman!)

Fraser is Rourke this year, except The Whale is no The Wrestler. What if Bill Nighy wins BAFTA, and cancels out Colin? I wonder what the older people voting number is versus the younger voters number? Old people are going to swoon for Bill Nighy. I wonder if he can make a splash into this 3 of Butler, Farrell, and Fraser

Fraser is Natalie Portman, not Mickey.

If by weakest, you mean least likeable, I would agree lol, but in terms of performance, he’s pretty stunning, explosive and subtle at the right moments.

Keoghan, Condon, and Farrell’s eyebrows were the MVPs imo

Awful reviews for The Whale as a movie. Fraser is done. He is getting the nomination but nothing more. Colin Farrell is the only favourite now

It’s been (correct me if I’m wrong) 13 years since the last time Best Actor went to an actor who’s film wasn’t included in Best Picture lineup.

There have only been 20 times out of 94 years where the Best Actor Oscar went to an Actor who wasn’t in a Best Picture nominee.
Several were Hollywood legends getting a career award, and many of the films were close to a Best Picture nomination in years of 5!

Here’s all 20 Best Actor winners whose film were not nominated for Best Picture

    – Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart in 2010.
    – Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland in 2007.
    – Denzel Washington for Training Day in 2002.
    – Nicolas Cage for Leaving Las Vegas in 1996.
    – Tom Hanks for Philadelphia in 1994.
    – Jeremy Irons for Reversal of Fortune in 1991.
    – Michael Douglas for Wall Street in 1988.
    – Paul Newman for The Color of Money in 1987.
    – Art Carney for Harry and Tonto in 1975.
    – Jack Lemmon for Save the Tiger in 1974.
    – John Wayne for True Grit in 1970.
    – Cliff Robertson for Charly in 1969.
    – Lee Marvin for Cat Ballou in 1966.
    – William Holden for Stalag 17 in 1954.
    – Humphrey Bogart for The African Queen in 1952.
    – José Ferrer for Cyrano de Bergerac in 1951.
    – Ronald Colman for A Double Life in 1948.
    – Fredric March for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in 1932.
    – Lionel Barrymore for A Free Soul in 1931.
    – Emil Jannings for The Last Command, The Way of all Flesh in 1929.

Bad news for Fraser. He is not winning. He is not a legend

    Basically, yeah.

If he doesn’t sweep the industry awards and/or his film doesn’t make a Best Picture nomination in a year of 10, then he’s probably not winning.

However, considering that it’s been 13 years since the last Best Actor win for a non-BP, there could be an argument to make that we’re overdue for another one.

The longest gap between non-BP Actor winners was 16 years between 1932 and 1948. The second-longest gap was 12 years between 1954 and 1966 and again between 1975 and 1987.

Yes, and i doubt this movie will be a box office hit, Fraser needs that to have a chance, the stars are alienating with Butler.

Adam Sandler could be the 3th, 4th or 5th. Netflix is campaigning very hard for him and his movie is very easy to see. His movie is basically “NBA Rocky”. LeBron James is campaigning for Adam Sandler too

Man I’m gonna be so bummed if Butler wins and he probs will. Like he’s pretty good in it but it’s just a shame that there are two original performances in Farrell and Fraser which will probs be overlooked. The Academy just loves a nice showy biopic performance to award. Like cmon man for once and show some love to the original performances.
