Don’t know why but even if Tom makes everywhere, I can see him missing. It’s just seems that kind of perfomance that doesn’t get many #1 votes but maybe I’m wrong about this and he’ll happen.
Hanks serves typical random SAG nominee that doesn’t translate anywhere else.

I think they meant Cruise 😂
FYC:
The HBO darlings everywhere (The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, Perry Mason, White House Plumbers, Love & Death);
The Apple gang (Bad Sisters, Slow Horses, Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Black Bird);
Poker Face, The Great, The Bear, Evil (especially Katja Herbers) and The Good Fight.Please! These gays, they're trying to murder me!

Pls. I got carried away since we were talking about Elvis and Butler.
December 8, 2022 at 4:51 pm #1205184343I understand. Just to get a clearer understanding then, can you kindly list your top 5 male performances this year? Edit: I’ll explain after, just curious
I still have Butler because the category is just empty and I haven’t seen that many male driven movies this year. Only really loved Park and Mescal. But right now I’d say: Park Hae-il (Decision to Leave), Paul Mescal (Aftersun), Harris Dickinson (Triangle of Sadness), Austin Butler (Elvis) and Brendan Fraser (The Whale). Tom Cruise was also quite good in Top Gun: Maverick, even though I wouldn’t necessarily nominate him. Alexander Skarsgard was great in The Northman too.
Don’t think I would nominate Butler or Fraser in a stronger year either (maybe I’ll drop them once I watch more movies). But like I said, only really loved the first two. Still need to watch more movies, especially Banshees of Inisherin, but Actor seems very weak this year.

Just curious.
I do prefer more subtle and non showy performances in general, but it also depends. Some of my fav performances of all time are quite showy. Like I said, I haven’t seen that many male driven movies this year, so my list is obviously a bit messy and all over the place.

And I thought you were talking about Hanks getting a nomination at SAGs for A Man Called Otto 💀 but I agree with him happening with Elvis there.
December 8, 2022 at 5:22 pm #1205184382Cruise definitely has the passion votes to cut in the Top 5 with a field as weak as this years & the movie potentially being a Top 3, its basically his name carrying the film
December 8, 2022 at 5:33 pm #1205184396The anti Butler movement is so strong here Lmao
Dare I ask what you hated about his performance without troll responses? What was so bad about his performance? Honestly.
I’ll try! So, first of all, as I’ve said on here multiple times, I don’t hate Butler’s performance and actually thought he was very good. He was charming and electric. And I personally am absolutely fine with him getting a nomination.
Winning would be souring for me because I grade on a curve for actors who are basing their performances on real-life, popularized figures. Someone who has access to hundreds of hours of footage, extensive archival information, books (and usually autobiographies) & interviews with friends and loved ones etc. of the person they are playing just has to assemble that information and develop how to show it so that when people watch them they think “oh yeah, they look/sound/have the same quirks/etc. as X!” Becoming the person is just remarkably less interesting to me than creating a character. And yes, Butler became a fantastic Elvis. But that takes less work & less creative effort. I find even an exceptional biographical portrayal to be less impressive than a very good performance of an original character.
Additionally, biographical performances tend toward the more bombastic — folded into a biographical performance you’ll always get those pieces that are catnip to voters: they’re gonna sing, or dance, or give an impassioned and recognized speech, re-enact some memorable historical moment, or whatever depending on who they’re playing. And of course that’s certainly a big thing with non-biopic performances too: everyone is looking for the big, showy scene where they cry and scream or punch a wall or whatever so everyone can clap and go “wow that’s ACTING.”
But I find subtle performances INFINITELY more impressive than those showy ones, and you just don’t get that in biopic roles. Because, hey, then why are we gonna make a movie about that person?
So while I am always less moved by biopic performances, I think that second part is the crux of me being so against specifically Butler winning. Because this year he happens to be going against Farrell, who crafted an original, wonderful character and played a role that masterfully utilizes that subtlety and nuance — he doesn’t really have that “big” scene. It’s not showy. The performance is comprised of moments where the way he moves those fabulous eyebrows or tilts his mouth in a particular way tells you everything you need to know and breaks your heart. That kind of performance is SO unrecognized so often. Plenty of performances this year, lots of performances last year, and plenty of performances EVERY year are ignored for even a nomination that masterfully display that kind of understated delicateness. And it grinds my gears every year. So the idea of one of those performances finally getting some real recognition is so refreshing to me.
So it’s not just the idea of him winning for me, it’s what it would mean if he wins over Farrell especially in a year like this, when that subtle performance can FINALLY win one. It would reinforce that no matter how good you are in an original role, no matter the circumstances, the Academy is just going to hand it to the biopic actor in an ok movie who did pretty good. Why bother doing anything original anymore? Everyone go join a biopic and get your Oscar.
EDIT: Goddamn sorry, I did not mean to write the Odyssey over here
December 8, 2022 at 6:56 pm #1205184518Farrell on paper seems to be the obvious winner. Film will be much more loved than Elvis or The Whale, where Best Actor may be the film’s only nominations. Farrell is at minimum going to sweep the critics awards and has the Volpi Cup, while starring in a best picture contender that will show up across the board.
Picture: Banshees, Top Gun
Actor: Farrell, Fraser, Butler
Supporting Actor: GleesonDecember 8, 2022 at 6:58 pm #1205184520Still hoping Fraser pulls through but it looks like Farrell is the frontrunner and I don’t mind it because he’s done some really good films in the last couple of years. I still think Butler can get in too.

December 9, 2022 at 3:37 pm #1205185752The Whale’s reviews are meh. I like Fraser. Even the bad reviews are singling out Chau (some of them over Fraser), so in addition to Fraser, I can see her and Fraser being the only two nominations for it.

😂😂😂 but seriously, The Whale needs to be a box office hit to keep Fraser chances alive
