The movie is doing well at the box office but has a mixed reception with critics.
    But who knows.

    It’s Clayton Davis lol

    Academy Award Winner Brendan Fraser

I’m keeping Paul Mescal in my predictions. I know he’s not a lock, but he should be and he has a good chance of being nominated. He’s my ride or die prediction.

Clayton Davis is predicting Tom Hanks for A Man Called Otto.

God, Clayton. Of course he is.

Ranking by how strongly I feel of their nomination, not by who I think has the most potential to win.

    01. Austin Butler

    02. Brendan Fraser

    03. Colin Farrell

    04. Bill Nighy

    05. Paul Mescal

    Alt. Adam Sandler

    ***

I think the top 4 here are basically locked. It’s that fifth spot that I’m just as unsure of as most. I thought Mescal would get into SAG and have a similar trajectory as Ryan Gosling in 2006, but doubted it when he missed. His snub seemed to have brought more attention, however, and I’ve settled back in saying that he’s the likely one here.

I’ve seen some major publications predicting Tom Cruise still (can y’all just stop it? lol), and a few serious predictions for Tom Hanks in A Man Called Otto. I’m convinced people are just hung-up on the idea that an unprecedented year of first-time nominees happening, but let’s just say, these things do sometimes happen. Hanks has struggled to get nominations for Picture nominees over the past decade, what really makes people sure he’d be a shoe-in for this one? I just don’t see it.

So my alternative pick is Sandler, who I’m not really confident in, but could see as the Academy’s chance for a “recognize him while we can” in a year as weak as this, and just a few years after his noted snub for Uncut Gems. Weirder career nods have happened, so it wouldn’t completely shock me.

I would predict Jeremy Pope as an alternative in place of Sandler if his film had any buzz outside of him. Supporting actress didn’t gain traction, and most performances that get nominated after just a Globe nod at the precursors are usually a) a veteran actor, or b) a film that had a nomination elsewhere.

The Brendan Fraser comeback narrative has too much momentum to slow down. He was hyped for an Oscar before anyone had even seen a trailer for “The Whale.” As much as I’d love to see Farrell win (or even Butler, for that matter, who was amazing although he hasn’t a snowball’s chance), this is all Fraser. If your name is on a ballot with Fraser or Ke Huy Quan, you simply accept that you’re going home empty-handed and enjoy a nice meal.

If Mescal made SAG I’d be confident him taking the last slot.

Previous nominees who missed SAG  were already established and well known in the industry or considered overdue or in a BP contender, don’t think he’ll make the cut

    FYC 2023:

Zar Amir Ebrahimi - Shayda (Best Actress)
Helen Mirren - Golda (Best Actress)
Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt - Oppenheimer (Best Actor/Actress)

TFW a few voters go rogue and don’t want an all-white-Anglo lineup so vote for Quan in lead instead, and the total lack of competition gets him in.
