There’s a real bias against Austin Butler in online circles because he came from the Disney Channel. Same reason there is so much bias against Zendaya too. They don’t want these actors to grow and win Emmys or BAFTAS. They went against the plan so it makes people uncomfortable. Child/teen stars like Natalie Portman and Kirsten Dunst are supposed to be getting Awards in their adult years but not, gasp, Disney channel kids! It’s some bizarre form of elitism. Even if these child stars came from money, hence why I say a bizarre form of elitism.

I don’t think a whole lot of people even know that Austin Butler got his start on Disney or Nickelodeon. Most of the complaints I see regarding a possible Oscar win for him are the same complaints that Rami Malek got – it’s a glorified mimicking of another famous (white) male legend. It’s what’s expected of the industry at this point. I don’t think anyone truly underestimated Austin this season. They just feared that the voters would go the typical route of giving the new young buck in town the gold for another generic biopic.

OK, experts. Is there a chance of a split between Butler and Fraser? The type that Adrien Brody stepped through 20 years ago?

0 chance, the race was over when The Whale wasn’t nominated for Best Picture.

Pundits really need to get a grip and stop predicting/pushing SOLELY on narrative and picking and choosing when to support the biopic bait based on who they want to win. They had no issue pushing Renee Zellweger for Judy because of the role and that comeback narrative (and it worked) but had a very hard time loosening Brendan Fraser (narrative) to Austin Butler (biopic). And I’m sure they will push the hell out of Bradley Cooper as the locked frontrunner but not a Jonathan Majors as a strong nominee. Please, pick one!

I don’t really think anyone cares that he started on Disney channel. I didn’t even know the man got his start on Disney channel. I think a lot of people online just did not care for Elvis the way the industry does.

More than the industry cares about Elvis. It’s one of the few nominees that’s an actual hit. Nobody has seen AfterSun, Banshees of Ed Sheeran, Living and The Whale (although due to the small budget The Whale is a success).

Adrien Brody’s Oscar race, two decades ago, is practically the opposite. This year, all of the Best Actor nominees are first-timers at the Oscars. Back in 2003, Brody was the only first-timer. All of his fellow nominees were previous Oscar winners: Nicolas Cage, Michael Caine, Daniel Day-Lewis and Jack Nicholson. So none of them were overdue to win. Plus, Brody was in a Best Picture nominee (”The Pianist”), which Cage, Caine and Nicholson were not. So that all helped Brody triumph.

By the way, 2003 was the year of ”Chicago” as Best Picture. And it’s criminal that Richard Gere, its terrific star and winner of the Golden Globe, didn’t even get nominated. The Academy still owes him!

”well gere was in just under 28% of chicago”

It didn’t stop Gere from winning the Golden Globe.

Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for ”The Silence of the Lambs” and his screen time was 16 minutes. One of the 1st awards he won that season was from the National Board of Review for Best Supporting Actor.

It’s not just how much screen time you have, but what you do with it.

Austin winning over Colin @ BAFTA is plain weird. It’s definitely him vs Fraser @ SAG & maybe Oscar. White ppl love them some Elvis, the singer, so Butler sweeping wouldn’t surprise me.

This is between Colin and Austin and it’s looking more likely for Austin to pull through. The only thing against him is his age and unknown before this role but they seem to really love Elvis. Colin is great but his performance is too subtle to win. He couldn’t even win BAFTA. Fraser has no chance even if he wins the SAG. The Whale is weak and the Academy does not care for any overdue narrative.

I’m still hoping there is enough industry goodwill for Banshees/Colin for Colin to triumph over Butler.

I agree with you on almost all counts. I do think the race is officially between Butler and Farrell, with Butler having the edge. However I wouldn’t discount Farrell. And as you said, it is a great performance. But I disagree with it being to subtle to win. Frances McDormand won with an interior performance in ” Nomadland ” and Brad Pitt was just as smooth and subtle as one can get in ” Once Upon A Time In Hollywood ” and he made it to the podium. The chances for a Butler win are looking stronger but I’m still pulling for a Farrell win. And you’re right about the overdue factor no longer carrying much weight, because if it did, Glenn Close would have had an Oscar by now.
