Darling, the only reason why Mescal would make the cut for the fifth slot is because he has more noms from the precursors than any other contender: CC and BAFTA. He also has a lot of fans here on GD and elsewhere, which is not surprising as he’s a hot Irish dude, but is this any different from the fans of other hot young stars who keep insisting their star will get in?

His case would be so much better if he had a SAG nomination and/or Aftersun made a huge showing at BAFTA. However, Aftersun’s nom haul at BAFTA is so bad with Charlotte Wells not even making Director that this probably hurts his chances.

The problem is that there’s no one that really makes sense that has nabbed multiple precursor noms. Then, we have to go to those in BP nominees: Tom Cruise, Gabriel Labelle, Felix Kammerer, Diego Calva, Harris Dickinson. I see even Brendon Gleeson has been added at 100-1 odds due to the possibility of the Academy forcing a category switch.

Here’s hoping that there’s a really unexpected nominee on Tuesday morning, just for the meltdown on here.

As much as I want Mescal to be nominated, I’ve been thinking about the passion that could land him that nomination. The thing is, Aftersun didn’t do as expected at BAFTA (though he is nominated) and among regional and national critics, the mentions mostly went to Aftersun as a whole OR Charlotte Wells; she is the actual breakthrough of this film.

I realize that other contenders fighting for that 5th spot don’t seem to have stronger passion either, but what if voters put Cruise or Kammerer instead simply because they are in bigger films (and more prominent BP contender), and therefore, their performances have higher possibilities to be seen compared to Mescal?

It’s honestly pretty exciting how unexpected that 5th slot is this year.

Mescal taking the 5th spot would be a very nice surprise. But if last year proved anything it’s that whenever there is a open slot the academy will give it to an old actor rather than young talent. If the Academy really likes TGM, they’ll give it to Tom Cruise.

Choosing Kammerer for this reason. I don’t see Cruise happening simply because he didn’t make in at SAG, despite Top Gun being a populist American film. And I don’t see the acting branch putting him at No.1, No.2. But if people truly love ‘All Quiet’, then Kammerer can be the surprise nomination.

I would be happy with Mescal, Kammerer or Fiennes. They did acting, their acting was moving and made you sit up. I haven’t seen The Inspection.

Tom Cruise, in this role in this shitty and basic male film? I’ll truly be disgusted. Cruise was once an incredible actor deserving of an Oscar but he hasn’t done any real acting since Tropic Thunder. It would be an affront to actors everywhere and completely tokenistic. Also Val Kilmer acted circles around him.

    Here for the comedies

A Fiennes nod out of nowhere would rock, so would a nomination for Pope — who should really be much more in the conversation — or Kammerer. Stop giving me hope. I would love to see any of them show up. Just hoping we don’t get another Bardem in Being the Ricardos nomination…but…we probably will.

    This is a good argument.

I wonder if there is a precedent for Kammerer? Like, a late breaker from an international feature about war

If Fiennes were to be nominated, it’d be one of the most inspired nominations this category has had in a long time.

That’s also, unfortunately, why I’m not predicting him. 😂

Yep. Firmly in the “too good for the Oscars” tier. 😩
