If Gaga does get a nomination for Best Original Song that would be her third nomination in that category, not her second…
I stand corrected. You are absolutely right!
October 11, 2022 at 9:16 am #1205115021Having seen TAR last night, Blanchett will definitely be nominated but I’m skeptical she can win. Not only will the movie/character be off-putting to the types of voters that like heartwarming stuff, but she doesn’t necessarily surprise in the way you might expect. Part of the reason she is SO GOOD is because the character is essentially an embodiment of Blanchett’s persona, bringing together all the themes she’s dealt with in all her most successful works: gender and androgyny (Elizabeth, I’m Not there, The Aviator, Carol), queerness and sexuality (Elizabeth, Notes on a Scandal, Carol) power and artistic expression (Elizabeth, The Aviator, Mrs. America, I’m Not There, Blue Jasmine), but it’s for this reason that the performance is basically exactly what I was expecting going into the movie. It’s EXCELLENT, but again not really showing us that she can do anything we didn’t already know she could do. Add that to the slightly cold and distance nature of the character and the film, I just don’t see her having a hook to take home her third like you usually need.
October 11, 2022 at 9:19 am #1205115023But I can see Tang Wei nominated for the Bafta and winning the trifecta.
Have you watched the film? I don’t think it’s a performance strong enough to happen in any major industry award.
Besides, I think the actress category this year is too stacked to be able to include contenders from international films.
2023:
"TAR", "Banshees","Batman"October 11, 2022 at 9:40 am #1205115101Cate Blanchett is not the frontrunner in my opinion its no evidence to suggest she is. This is not a attack on cate i dont think anyone is the frontrunner best actress the last Oscars have been a real race. I think every lady in contention is strong and can have a case made for them.

No shade but i feel like you guys just choosing someone to be a front runner because Cate isn’t front running anything lol. It ok guys lead actress throughout the years have had strong frontrunners almost all the years. But that’s starting to fade with the surprises this category has had. Its just my opinion but the race IS WIDE OPEN REALLY OPEN its so wide open that if anyone is a frontrunner there a weak ass front runner lol.

That’s an interesting take because I see those elements as possibly a plus factor for her. If you like Blanchett, giving her a 3rd Oscar for a film that capitalizes on her persona and previous roles would make sense. You don’t always have to play against type. McDormand certainly didn’t.

If it was a more mainstream appealing movie I would totally agree with you, but I think it’s going to be a bit too off-putting for some to want to put in enough of the mental energy to recognize how she’s playing with her persona. Also while McDormand totally played into her persona for 3 Billboards, I’d argue her 3rd win in Nomadland had a bit of an against type appeal. She was still a down to earth no nonsense lady like she usually is, but a MUCH softer, sweeter, more understated one than she had been known for for a while. Coming so soon after her much more aggressive perf in 3 Billboards I think it was a pleasant surprise for people to be reminded that she could go smaller. I think to win a 3rd you need a good hook other than just being very good. If TAR becomes a serious best picture contender though, then all bets are off.
October 11, 2022 at 10:37 am #1205115297Cate Blanchett is unstoppable lol.
October 11, 2022 at 10:45 am #1205115305Blanchett is winning the Sag and the Bafta.

And who would be the favorite? Assume that so far Blanchett has a chance of winning.
October 11, 2022 at 10:54 am #12051153241. Cate Blanchett
2. Michelle Yeoh
3. Danielle Deadwyler
4. Michelle Williams
5. Viola Davis
October 11, 2022 at 11:03 am #1205115341Yeoh in a sci-fi movie can hurt your chances.

Hey, didn’t Norma Jeane end up quote tweeting people in Portuguese too?
