If it was a more mainstream appealing movie I would totally agree with you, but I think it’s going to be a bit too off-putting for some to want to put in enough of the mental energy to recognize how she’s playing with her persona. Also while McDormand totally played into her persona for 3 Billboards, I’d argue her 3rd win in Nomadland had a bit of an against type appeal. She was still a down to earth no nonsense lady like she usually is, but a MUCH softer, sweeter, more understated one than she had been known for for a while. Coming so soon after her much more aggressive perf in 3 Billboards I think it was a pleasant surprise for people to be reminded that she could go smaller. I think to win a 3rd you need a good hook other than just being very good. If TAR becomes a serious best picture contender though, then all bets are off.
