November 29, 2022 at 8:42 am #1205170403People underestimate the power of a movie star.
November 29, 2022 at 9:04 am #1205170421@Mladen YES! Cate Blanchett is playing Linda Tarr playing Lydia Tár wheras Huppert would just be playing only Lydia Tár. There’s a certain pathetic and desperate energy surrounding Tar’s grooming of Olga where she’s fascinating by a stuffed animal she owns, which is just depressing that I don’t think any other actor could capture. Blanchett has this certain charisma in Tár that’s so human and natural for any person to be bewitched by her towering persona that’s really difficult to depict. Any person can be charismatic, but Blanchett’s charisma specifically feels very grounded.
Also, darling your taste in your FYC!
Thanks. I am firm believer in spreading the wealth/love during award season. Never understood people who want one movie to win it all.
As for TAR, exactly. Huppert could have played German conductor, but she would never be convincing as American playing European. Lydia’s life is performance, desperate need to conceal ugly and for her, shameful realities of life. She’s perpetuating that fantasy until everything starts crashing and burning. I simply adore how Blanchett plays this.

With respect, I think some of you are underestimating what a great actress Huppert is. I’m very confident she could successfully pull off being an American playing European, but regardless, Blanchett is just incredible as Lydia Tar.
November 29, 2022 at 9:17 am #1205170438Huppert can play anything. There’s simply no actor like her.
November 29, 2022 at 9:21 am #1205170444Huppert could’ve easily done Lydia Tár. Cmon now. She’s literally one of our finest actresses.
November 29, 2022 at 9:30 am #1205170464Btw who’s winning right now among the critics? There’s too many of them so it’s hard to follow all of their awards.
November 29, 2022 at 9:31 am #1205170467Ermmm isabelle huppert would’ve ate Lydia Tár up y’all are lyinggg. The lecture scene that Blanchett does is soooo amateurish.

I have no doubt Huppert would have done it marvelously. My comment was not intended as claiming Huppert wouldn’t be able to pull it off. It is just that role simply worked for Blanchett on numerous levels.

I adore her. But I don’t believe everyone can do everything. This has nothing to do with Huppert and TAR, just to be clear. More with my personal views on acting as such.

God, I feel like I have rocked the boat too hard. Yes, she is amazing and I didn’t want to say she couldn’t have done it. She would be amazing as Lydia. I was just pointing out certain thing about Lydia which most people forget. And that particular bit works better for Blanchett than it would work for Huppert.
I might have used too strong words in my post. Apologies for that.

Go and watch this year’s Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, then come back and say this again 💀 she wasn’t good.
I do however disagree with the ‘only Blanchett could play this role’ narrative some of the Blanchett stans have been pushing, which I think is a misunderstanding of Field’s comments on writing the role for Cate.

November 29, 2022 at 10:22 am #1205170541Imagine to award Paltrow (only bcs she serviced weinstein d) over Cate… she should’ve get ha gold for Elizabeth.
I don’t even like paltrow’s win, but this is such an insanely sexist and gross comment. Y’all need to stop slut shaming women and automatically resorting to calling them whores without any evidence because they won Oscars over your faves. In fact, he literally sexually harassed her and you’re holding that against her? Absolutely gross and misogynistic.

100%. Isabelle Huppert is more than enough of an actress to play a character within a character. She has already shown her expertise in portraying façades, such as in The Piano Teacher (a film that obviously was a big influence for Field in the creation of Tár) and La Cérémonie.
However, I agree with Mladen that the constant mention of Huppert as a point of comparison is quite unnecessary, as it adds nothing to the discussion and since in the end the only person we will see as Lydia Tár is Blanchett.November 29, 2022 at 10:28 am #1205170556Go and watch this year’s Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, then come back and say this again

I imagine she played it like the director intended her to. Even the best actors are sometimes constricted by mediocre films like, well, that one.
