Darling, I’ve watched The Fabelmans in an empty theatre and I hope Williams and her goofy wig doesn’t win that golden trash for this annoying ass performance.
I love Williams, but all she did in this movie was whining and being horrible to her husband, while drunkenly dancing in a slutty manner and makes her kids and husband suffers from her shenanigans.
The writing (the usual eye-rolling sentimental style from Spielberg) makes this character and her acting decisions even worse.
God I hate sentimental Spielberg films… Guess this one will not be my fare.

November 25, 2022 at 8:22 am #1205166462I don’t know
I just don’t feel Michelle Williams has this in the bag.
She has the Oscar bait performance but this is not Chastain, a year against contenders who were previous winners and with very weak narratives. She has significant hurdles.
I will put her at the front, just in case, somehow, both EEAAO and Tar get snubbed in Best Picture
I really doubt EEAAO and TAR are missing the Best Picture. EEAAO has kept momentum despite early release and Gotham and Spirit awards showed us that the movie is still considered one of the best of the season and certainly one of two/three best low-budget movies. Same can be said for TAR, adding also it will have the support of highbrow members (practically the only one in that department).
We’ll see how The Fablemns will fare with the audience. Same with Williams. So far, her reviews have not been on par with Blanchett, Deadwyler and Yeoh. I may be wrong but that is my perception.
Not to mention that in a year in which Blanchett, Yeoh and Davis went outside the box of what is expected of female actors, in which we have 3/4 POC actresses in Top 10 discussion, at least two that have also garnered serious attention from the critics… Against all of that, choosing Williams as the winner. It wouldn’t be another Paltrow, but I doubt that victory would age well.
Fight me but I’m confident that Davis is not happening. She’s not essentially what makes The Woman King outstanding, and a kind of supporting role in a genre film doesn’t help either. I doubt that performance could get a nom even in a weak year (last year, for example.) I’m counting on Robbie, Ackie, or Colman for the fifth slot.
Davis gets that 5th slot for personal preferences (I think she is THAT good despite what I think Academy may believe). Although, she might get a big push from SAG. Alas, same can be said for Robbie and Colman at BAFTA. I don’t see Davis as the winner, but I would like to see her nominated.

I don’t see Colman making BAFTA with such a weak film. I think our top 3 there will be Blanchett, Yeoh and Robbie/Williams. As for the jury picks I’m not that sure about Deadwyler since her baity and showy performance is not what they usually go for. Tang Wei, Rosy McEwen, Emma Thompson, Emily Watson, Taylor Russell or Zar Amir Ebrahimi could still happen over her. I expect some big surprises there, we always get them.
November 25, 2022 at 11:05 am #1205166643So I watched the fabelmans and I gotta agreed Williams was unbelievably hammy. This is probably the worst performance of all the contenders leading and supporting actress categories. I am so glad she not in supporting to win over foy because she inferior to all of the actresses. If she is nominated it probably will replace my week with Marilyn as my least favorite Oscar nominated performance from her. It’s also the worst performance of her career and probably the first bad performance I’ve seen from her.

Hmm I’m not sure if I agree with this. Since the jury system was introduced we’ve had Vanessa Kirby, Mike Faist, Aunjanue Ellis and Leslie Odom-Jr. as jury picks for bait performances in a melodrama, remake of a Hollywood musical and two biopics. Till is a biographical drama but it isn’t any baitier than West Side Story, King Richard and One Night in Miami were and Deadwyler’s performance isn’t that much showier than any of the aforementioned performances were.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I found her performance incredibly showy. We’ll just have to disagree on this 😊

Who do you have as jury picks? Tang Wei makes sense as the foreign choice but I think they will also nominate performances from the home turf like they usually do.
November 25, 2022 at 1:19 pm #1205166705naomi ackie is an english tv bafta winner, so as long as her movie’s solid she would make sense.

Darling, you have been missed
FYC:
Zar Amir Ebrahimi - Holy Spider (Best Actress)
Ana de Armas, Julianne Nicholson - Blonde (Best Actress, Supporting Actress)
Samantha Morton - She Said (Best Supporting Actress)
Kerry Condon - The Banshees of Inisherin (Best Supporting Actress)November 25, 2022 at 1:53 pm #1205166720Although I enjoyed Viola in The Woman King, I would not nominate her unless the competition was super weak. The standout performance for me was Lashana Lynch.
November 25, 2022 at 1:59 pm #1205166722Michelle Williams was great in the Fabelmans. There is nothing wrong her hamming it up if that what her character called for. And she absolutely felt like a lead.
