Nah. The Kiki is that she’d still be sitting in 3rd behind them. She’s not fighting to get in because she missed SAG. LOL. Come on now. Her film is a top 3 contender. She’s not fighting for 5th. She’s easily in 3rd/4th.
Uhmm… Missing SAG was definetely bad for Williams and she is definetely not a lock now. Her film made into Ensemble and most especially Supporting Actor (despite Dano missing the Globes).

January 15, 2023 at 1:11 pm #1205244941IN: Cate Blanchett, Michelle Yeoh, Michelle Williams The Fight for 4th and 5th: Andrea Riseborough, Ana De Armas, Danielle Deadwyler, Viola Davis Andrea predictors… stop it! Too little too late! Movie has been out 10 whole months folks, way too late to just get started with it now. so it’s really between Ana, Danielle, and Viola rounding out those last 2 spots
so why did you include her in your fighting for 4th or 5th? Lol
January 15, 2023 at 1:13 pm #1205244948Still not understanding what’s wrong with wanting an Oscar nomination. She’s jumped through fewer hoops than the other contenders to try and get one, but for some reason she’s getting hated on.
And rightfully so. I mean, beside the sheer distastefulness of entire thing, proving us that you can do everything if you call few friends leaves a mark. You do understand that if she gets nomination, the shitstorm will be coming. And it won’t be nice.
There is nothing wrong about wanting an Oscar. But there is also an organic way to do things. Look at Deadwyler or Yeoh. Yeoh didn’t call everyone in her notebook to start promoting the movie. It was her performance that rallied people. Same with Deadwyler. People talked about her performance from the moment it hit the theatre. We have spent pages and pages talking how Williams had Best Supporting Actress Oscar in the bag and she decided to go Lead. Blanchett, Davis, de Armas, Colman, Lawrence… Even less known names such as Tang Wei or Zar Amir Ebrahimi… All of them had natural and organic reaction to their movies and performances.
“To Leslie” isn’t a movie that was swallowed by Christmas and Avatar premiere. It didn’t premiere a month or two ago. It was released on 12 March 2022. For nine months, not a single soul mentioned this movie and in the span of 48 hours, we got 20-30 high-profile actors talking about it? It comes to the point that this can’t even be called movie promotion, but an unhinged desire for Oscar nom, that was not driven by performance but by someone’s circle of friends. It turns entire process into the circus that damages any credibility Academy has left with.
And also… One has to enjoy how they are trying to tell us that POC actresses are safe. Because they know if Andrea gets instead of e.g. Deadwyler who is also in a small movie lacking visibility, all hell would break loose.

Most of us supporting Andrea were quite aware that she’s probably not happening before your comment lol. Its about trying to give a boost to a great performance which does still have a very small chance at receiving a nomination, so why not grasp it, especially when her detractors are loudly making their opposition to her efforts known?
January 15, 2023 at 1:17 pm #1205244966Yeoh didn’t called her whole notebook because she was a studio and money behind. Make no mistake, there’s no such as “organically” when it comes to Oscar campaigning, the difference is that Andrea’s one is just in-your-face type. Parties, roundtables, magazine covers, trips etc all those things these big contenders are doing, Andrea is doing what she can, if that means using her high profile friends, then she should go for it.

January 15, 2023 at 1:21 pm #1205244974Huns, even actresses who got nominated at all 4 precursors like Lady Gaga and Caitriona Balfe did last year were not nominated for the Oscar. Balfe was even in a Best Picture nominee last year and Judi Dench got in instead. I would say that Blanchett and Yeoh are the closest to what we can call “locks” this year, but still nothing’s ever 100% until the noms come out. Deadywler and Davis are in no way, shape or form, locks.
January 15, 2023 at 1:23 pm #1205244978Dream lineup (still have quite a bit I want to see) :
#1 Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie)
#2 Taylor Russell (Bones and All)
#3 Cate Blanchett (Tar)
#4 Danielle Deadwyler (Till)
#5 Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once)

Michelle Yeoh has one of the most amazing performances of the year, Box office success and a movie that almost became an instant classic. EEAAO was released the same weekend “To Leslie”. People saying Yeoh deserves an Oscar started almost immediately after the movie release. Yes, that talk was then picked up by studio and elevated it into an Oscar campaign that then got substantiated with critics and Globe wins.
What is being done with Andrea… I don’t even know how to call this. It is so ludicrous that 10 months after movie premiered, all of these actors suddenly remembered this movie all of a sudden. It is really distasteful and if she ends up taking Deadwyler’s spot… God help us all.

January 15, 2023 at 1:40 pm #1205245014OK… Here is an interesting thing… Apparently, TAR had a great weekend in UK, earning $486k in 135 theatres. We’ll see how the movie will go with British and international audience…

Best Supporting Actress: Angela BassettJanuary 15, 2023 at 1:47 pm #1205245044Danielle Deadwayler (Till) – Was able to get in at SAG, an awards body voted on by her peers in the industry. She was also longlisted at BAFTA despite her film not being released there until January. She was able to achieve all this despite not being a big name in Hollywood, her film not being recognized in any other category, and not playing a famous celebrity in a biopic (a la Marilyn Monroe). There is definitely passion behind her.
Viola Davis (The Woman King) – Davis is one of the most respected people in the industry. I don’t see her as someone who gets in everywhere but then misses at the Oscars like an Amy Adams in Arrival. Viola Davis has 5 SAG Awards and 4 of those are for individual performances while Amy Adams has 1 SAG Ensemble win. When Davis won SAG for Ma Rainey, that was a category with no clear frontrunner up to Oscar night, but everyone knew to predict her for SAG because they knew how loved she was by her peers so I think that support and love she has from her peers will carry on to nomination day.
Michelle Williams is vulnerable because she has already missed SAG despite her film, The Fabelmans, getting nominated for Ensemble and Supporting Actor and there is also some confusion as to which category she actually belongs in. Ana De Armas (Blonde) reminds me of Lady Gaga for House of Gucci. Some people adore her performance while some don’t. Same goes with the reaction to her film. Some people find it great while others abhor it. If there is anyone that can miss the Oscar nom after getting in everywhere else, it’s De Armas (not Davis), just like Gaga last year.
I actually don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility for Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie) to be nominated after this week. However, I think if she does get in, it would likely be over Williams and De Armas because of the reasons stated above.

also, box office mojo and the-numbers have domestic as n/a, which i assume means it was released in 1 theater or so.
January 15, 2023 at 2:50 pm #1205245136I apologize if this has been posted already— I’ve skipped a lot of the posts in the last 48 hours— but while it would be EXTREMELY rare, it wouldn’t be unprecedented for an actress little known to the general public who missed all precursors and was in an indie movie that grossed less than a million to wage her own last minute campaign and get an Oscar nomination. In 1980, Diana Scarwid came out of nowhere and received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Inside Moves. In the next two years she landed roles in Silkwood and Mommie Dearest so it doesn’t seem the industry blamed her for her aggressive self-promotion. It was a long time ago, and I’ll be amazed if Andrea Riseborough gets nominated for an Academy Award, but sometimes very strange things happen in Oscar campaigns.
