It’s so interesting how we complain about the industry’s “playing a real person” bias because it usually leads to super basic, straight down the middle biopics crowding out the categories, and yet this year that bias is very possibly going to lead to them nominating what will be one of the most controversial movies to receive an ATL line nomination in recent memory, and at the expense of much more down the middle oscar-y choices! And she doesn’t even do that good a Monroe impression!

I may be wrong, but I don’t think she campaigned in lead.
Lakeith Stanfield for Judas and the Black Messiah.
I wonder if Williams may be nominated in supporting instead of lead. If it happens, it will be a very curious race.

She campaigned in supporting but Globes and BAFTA rejected the category placement and forced her into Lead (where she was nominated at both while also scoring nominations in supporting for Ex Machina).
Stanfield is the closest comparison, but he also got zero precursor attention so the only way oscar voters would have even known he was being campaigned in lead is if they paid close attention to FYC ads, which they very well may have not. Everyone will know that Williams is being campaigned in lead, and I doubt they’d bother moving her when there doesn’t seem to be that much passion to get her nominated anyway.

January 19, 2023 at 6:10 pm #1205254500Yeoh’s main problem is Quan. he’s going to win so he is stealing a bit of her thunder and AMPAS may spread the wealth. As others pointed out, 2 acting wins from the same movie are rare. Also, EEAAO is the frontrunner and stands a good chance in Director and Original. So since supporting actor is locked, there may be less urgency to award another actor/actress. I get that she has the best narrative but many voters don’t vote for narrative. Also, it’s the year with so many veterans whose time has finally come, and 2 are locked to win (Quan and Bassett). That may not extend to other 2 categories though both Fraser and Farrell stand a good chance against newcomer Butler.
January 19, 2023 at 6:15 pm #1205254507Yeoh’s main problem is that the academy all but once have voted for white actresses – there will likely be 3 p.o.c. nominees this year and this is the year for a second one to win and that will be Yeoh. I am predicting Yeoh. Here’s hoping she wins SAG and people come to their senses about giving Blanchett a third Oscar when there is a great alternative to give a first Oscar to in Yeoh. Team Yeoh 100%!!!!!
