Depending on how people perceive de Armas race wise (people will argue as to whether’s she white or not) it’s possible that if she gets in alongside Davis, Deadwyler, and Yeoh that many will think of Blanchett being the only white actress in the category. The optics of her winning in that scenario may be something that people take particular umbrage over, which would likely help Yeoh, as the only other person who can win.

People don’t vote like that. There are two POC likely winning in supporting. Why do half the posts on this thread have to be about identity and race? It’s so strange.

your oscar voter right here
She was the lead in the Oscar-nominated movie Knives Out and despite being a woman of colour will play Marilyn Monroe in the upcoming biopic Blonde style magazine
in everything everywhere all at once michelle yeoh says “she is white” and stephanie hsu says “she is half mexican” about her girlfriend character, the daniels also thinks that latinas are not white
Ana de Armas is POC
I've suggested black actresses in the past like Janelle Monae, but it depends on who's playing Catwoman too.

This is not any users fault it lies directly with the Academy. White mediocrity has prevailed at this award show, more specifically in this category, since the awards inception. One non white actress has won in the 95 year history of this show. One. It’s not that difficult to understand why when someone like Yeoh who is coming very close, since Davis in the Help, that race becomes a factor. Y’all don’t see how the optics of this look when literally one non white actress has won this category.
Save the responses of “performance over narrative” BS cause it is a BS argument when you have winners like, Julia Roberts, Mira Sorvino, Helen Hunt, Emma Stone, Sandra Bullock, even the goddess Cher who have won for just okay performances, when non white actresses have been ignored.

There have been many a performer who hits all the four major precursors only to miss out on an Oscar nomination – it’s usually someone who is perceived to be a lock for a nomination while having no chance of actually winning (Lady Gaga: 2022, Amy Adams: 2017, Emma Thompson: 2014, Marion Cotillard: 2013, Tilda Swinton: 2012).
I think Davis is relatively safe for a nomination, but unlike Blanchett or Yeoh, her missing would not be completely out of the equation. Crucially, unlike Blanchett, Deadwyler, De Armas, and Yeoh, Davis isn’t the “star” performer of her film if reviews are any indication (which is likely one reason as to why Williams has been losing steam).
January 19, 2023 at 7:18 pm #1205254560I want to remind people that Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor for Three Billboards – so there is no reason for Yeoh and Quan not to also do this. Macconaghey (sp?) and Leto both won for The Dallas Buyers Club and Bale and Leo both won for The Fighter – so it can happen.
Yeoh has another advantage that McDormand had when she won for Nomadland: her film can win BP. And she is extremely well liked too. Team Yeoh 100%

Four more words:
Emma Thompson
Caitriona Balfe
The same could happen to Kerry Condon, too.

She doesn’t belong there and you know it.

The vast majority of Mexicans aren’t white so I don’t know why that bothers you.
January 19, 2023 at 8:40 pm #1205254655Frances had no competitor, she straight up swept till the Oscars, no one was stopping her. can’t say the same for Yeoh, who couldn’t even win the CC’s or at least tie w Blanchett, when her film practically dominated the night. no matter the continuous projection of how much stronger can EEAAO become, this is ironically one of the most vulnerable competitive fields for the film

Can’t disagree. But that doesn’t mean I won’t be hoping for Yeoh to win.
There’s still time for the wind to shift. And I’m not necessarily referring to industry wins. The Sunne in Splendour.
