How is Andrea not embarrassed? Ganging up your rich white friends to buy you a nomination over more deserving black actresses. Waiting for poc actors to get a similar “grassroots campaign” by the industry folks.
Have you watched To Leslie. Andrea deserves the nomination as does Deadwyler. Williams should be embarrassed and ashamed of herself for campaigning lead and taking the spot away from a deserving and actual leading performance.

You want someone to be mad at Andrea, and I’m not gonna give it to you. Her desperately trying to get a nod has little to do with the actual systematic racism and racial privileges that she likely benefitted from. While you still have yet to point out any actual hypocrisies or contradictions in my posts. (And I don’t recall being mad at any of the people nominated at the Grammys that year. I also didn’t really think The Weeknd was that deserving. And I was more upset about Fiona Apple not getting into AOTY. I merely pointed out how genre bias and genre confusions and being seen as an “urban artist” has racial connections and likely hurt his chances). I already said Danielle deserved a nod and that race and the subject matter and her film not having enough “old white people appeal” likely had something to do with her snub. Time to move the hell on.
You’re being a little arrogant here because there are enough people calling out the obvious shadiness in Andrea’s nomination for me to “want” you to be mad at the woman. Did I say I was mad at Andrea? No. But I clearly see the bullshit from the industry, and I will continue to call it out. And Andrea definitely benefited from her white privilege because you know damn well a WOC wouldn’t have received this forced last minute blitz. Stop the cap.
January 24, 2023 at 10:09 am #1205263668I agree. The above the line categories will be a big puzzle to solve. I just don’t think the Daniels have enough cache to win, especially when Field is right there and is a much safer pick if voters want to reward a “newcomer.” And also, there’s the puzzle of trying to figure out what else The Fabelmans could win. Director for Spielberg could be its only chance above the line.
It’s taken a long time but I think TAR is officially not just an acting showcase for Blanchett anymore. The trifecta and Field’s steadiness have pushed it up in the Picture rankings. It could’ve easily missed those techs, especially Cinematography. And it really does stand out in the Best Picture slate as the only proper arthouse film, which is part of why I think it did so well today.
Field is not a newcomer- he made In the Bedroom and Little Children.

Not a good point to make, Aparicio is the definition of a coattail nom. She would never be nominated for a panned movie because her performance is questionable, even if she was white. I get what you mean but there are better examples.

I couldn’t agree more. There was no budget to promote her work, yet the industry took note. I love it when the under dog comes through and Andrea gave a kick ass performance.

Expanding on my thoughts here.
Williams is the type of nomination we’ve seen many times before. I think a good comparison off the top of my head is Amy Adams in Vice back in 2018.
Former multi-time nominees that have built an ‘overdue’ narrative from their multi-times being nominated. The film itself has the buzz it builds from its familiar beats (it’s ‘baitiness’). That actor gets buzz before the movie is even out or finished. When it’s released, they usually get good reviews, which doesn’t dismantle its potential for a nomination, because the only way to fail is if both the film underperforms, or the performance outright is seen as bad. They no longer win as the early year frontrunner, because they are ‘underwhelming’ once the film is actually seen, but still ride the surety of the buzz from way back before it was even seen.
Williams is so that type of nomination, and it’ll go down in the future as one of those nominations that are ‘stereotypical’ for the Academy to recognize. What makes this one a harder pill to swallow, though, is the insistence of category fraud in the name of Williams’ stature as an overdue actress recognized multiple times in the lead category up to this point.
Yes, there is a very apt discourse on the privilege of Riseborough’s position in getting this nomination, but I’m excited for what this holds for many performances in the years to come (next year, voting week is gonna be a mess if Twitter is still around lol), and I truly think we should focus our anger at the Williams nomination and what that speaks of than a performance that genuinely did a lot to be where it is today.
I sincerely doubt Williams’ nomination comes from any passion whatsoever for the performance, and everything to do with pre-release buzz, her film, and her name.
