Todd Field isn’t winning sh!t.
A very dismissive thing to say especially since TÁR drastically overperformed on Oscar morning. He’s definitely not the frontrunner but cannot be counted out. He’s 3rd at worst.

He has the chance of winning something, at least the original screenplay.
January 27, 2023 at 11:28 am #1205270769Right now, I suspect Todd Field is taking Screenplay. I do not buy the hype for EEAAO’s writing, which is it’s weakest element, but we’ll see how things shake out over the coming weeks.
I thought the script for Birdman was a mess and wondered how it took three writers to cobble together that screenplay, and they ended up winning an Oscar. So who knows?

Especially if we see a scenario where EEAAO picks up steam in picture and actress and Banshees picks up steam in actor, original screenplay could definitely becomes the place to reward a well liked movie that isn’t winning anywhere else.

January 27, 2023 at 11:37 am #1205270793why in the world does anyone need the people who populate AMPAS’s Marketing and Public Relations branch?
i think this Branch is honoring people who work in this field, Film Industry has marketing & public relation to “sell” their movies…
Best Actor : Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Austin Butler, Bill Nighy
Best Actress : Michelle Yeoh, Ana de Armas, Cate Blanchett , Andrea Riseborough, Danielle Deadwyler
January 27, 2023 at 11:52 am #1205270813Andrea Riseborough’s career is over. She will always be remembered for this disgusting nomination.
January 27, 2023 at 12:00 pm #1205270823To be clear I’m pretty sure To Leslie did have and spend a PR budget, it was just very small compared to other films (just as the budget to make the film was) and they decided to take a chance to spend ALL of it the one week of oscar voting vs. bigger productions spending money to build buzz for months.
It really sounds like the studio/the movie didn’t spend anything on an awards campaign, but Riseborough and her friends did, but it still wasn’t money that pushed her to the nomination.
It was picked up by the fledgling distributor Momentum Pictures, which didn’t have the resources to give it a big theatrical release (it grossed just $27,322) or awards push. So Riseborough began independently organizing a campaign with her own funds and with the impassioned support of her manager and greatest champion, Jason Weinberg, and publicists from Narrative PR (which reps Riseborough personally) and Shelter PR (which came on for the campaign).
Team Riseborough mounted some traditional campaign events — such as screenings with receptions organized by Andrew Saffir’s The Cinema Society and Colleen Camp — but above all they hit upon a strategy of promotion that not even money could buy.

This is just comical.

Yea if anything I think this is going to be a bigger career boost for her than if she’d been campaigning all season long.
January 27, 2023 at 12:12 pm #1205270834Since there is a 1,000 plus members in the Actor’s branch, maybe they should have each voter vote for their favorite performance. One vote for each voter. The top 5 vote ‘getters’ are your nominees. Isn’t that how SAG does it? Having voters rank their preferences doesn’t seem like the best way to get a top 5. And it’s ripe for folks downgrading some performances because they want to make sure their #1 gets nominated.
Maybe they want to make sure there will always be 5 nominees selected. In very extreme situation, though unlikely, 999 of voters pick one universally favored performance and there won’t be 5 nominees selected.

I beg to differ. EEAAO’s strong points were its editing & writing when the movie first came out of the gate last year. But seeing how you saw an Oscar winner (birdman) script was also trash, perhaps your taste is just unique. And that’s fair.

I think she’s in a lose-lose situation no matter what the Academy does regarding the investigation. This marks a bad precedent for her, if she keeps the nomination, people will still be skeptical about it, if it gets rescinded, it’d be a proof about the fishy campaign.
