At this point, it would need more than SAG and BAFTA for anyone to win against Cate and possibly Andrea.
January 31, 2023 at 8:29 pm #1205278966Even better, no gender categories for Drama performance (6 nominees) and include 6 nominees for Genre performance. Fantasy, Horror, and Action have been ignored for far too long. Let’s just look at what Angela is accomplishing.
No. Not this « no gender » nonsense
January 31, 2023 at 8:34 pm #1205278968I think Yeoh fans would still be mostly okay with a Blanchett win as she is the frontrunner, but imagine the social media mess if Riseborough won over Yeoh. Hollywood picking their connections instead of recognizing diverse talent will not be received well.
I will not be okay if Cate wins.
And for person above who wants 6 nominees, what if i.e. secretly Emma Thompson was 6th this year and we had 5 whites + Yeoh? People would be even more annoyed.
January 31, 2023 at 9:17 pm #1205278986Okay the people vilifying Andrea Riseborough have to stop. This is actually insane. No rules were broken, so stop acting like she deserves to be cancelled or some shit. It’s honestly pathetic. Her campaign was a little shady and that’s it. The rules are now being changed because of it. It’s not something that needs to tarnish her reputation.
I get it, you’re upset Danielle missed, we all are, but omissions happen! It’s similar to Lady Gaga missing last year (both had 9/2 odds). There wasn’t some great conspiracy of the acting branch to omit black women from the best actress category this year. I know it’s an easy gripe to fall back on due to the political climate and the Oscars’ history, but since 2009, exactly 10% of the Best Actress nominees have been Black. That’s pretty dang close to the 12.4% share of the US population. So instead of doing this weird backwards OscarsSoWhiteButNotReally B.S., how bout we celebrate some of the great things the acting branch did this year. They nominated a Black man that was not expected to get a nom in Supporting Actor! They nominated a Latina that was on the cusp of a nom in Actress! And they nominated FOUR Asians, in every category sans Actor, with two in Supporting Actress, of which one role was not even about Asian identity!
I understand being upset about your faves missing, but not to the point of bringing down another — especially one that’s incredibly deserving.
Once there was only Dark. If you ask me, the Light's winning.

Worst idea ever. This would diminish any semblance of cultural cache the Oscars have with the general public. Michelle Yeoh and Angela Bassett are proving that genre performances can be nominated, and even be frontrunners under the current categories anyway.

January 31, 2023 at 11:53 pm #1205279031Huh,andrea might be winning the oscar.
February 1, 2023 at 12:12 am #1205279039I just saw To Leslie. Andrea was great. I just hope this campaign started earlier so it doesn’t look like she was championed the last minute.
Personal ranking
1. Michelle Yeoh
2. Andrea Riseborough
3. Cate Blanchett
4. Ana De Armas

Sorry but this ‘% of the population’ point is so stupid, and is often used by right-wingers to invalidate calls for better representation (not saying you did this knowingly). People don’t want the Oscars to perfectly reflect the 12.4% black population in the US. They want the deserving work of black women recognised and uplifted. Was Chinonye Chukwu wrong in her assessment of the industry? She’s been harassed with racist comments ever since posting her thoughts. But poor Andrea right?
I can’t speak for other posters, but I have always centred the systemic exclusion of black women in my posts on this issue. This is true whether people like it or not, and I’ll never stop talking about it. You guys can enjoy Andrea’s nomination, but the framing of this as simply an attack on Andrea as an individual is inaccurate. The campaign was utterly bizarre, and that’s a fact.

February 1, 2023 at 3:39 am #1205279144I usually don’t agree with Clayton but he might be right about Causeway. Brian Tyree Henry got nominated with no precursors and with no trifecta win. Maybe JLaw was close too. We’ll never know but people could be wrong about that 6th place. They sure watched and liked it.

Michelle Yeoh can easily win the Oscar with those awards when Colman was able to upset with only Bafta and GG

Michelle Yeoh can win with SAG+Globes, although her case would be much stronger with BAFTA win under her belt. In either case, she can win. The only way certain way would be for her to lose both SAG and BAFTA, which I doubt will happen.
As for Colman… Colman won the big industry awards – BAFTA and AACTA, plus European Film Award. She won the Globe, she won as part of Acting Ensemble at CCA. She won LAFCA and NFSC (if I remember correctly). I just feel we all went with Close because of how strong her overdue narrative was, ignoring very clear love for Colman’s performance.

This is so speculative. Chances are JLaw wasn’t sixth.

If Tyree Henry lost the nomination by a few votes people here would never think he was 6th with no precursors. You just never know. People are so convinced it was Deadwyler or Davis but this could veer into myopia.
