I personally am ‘enjoying’ this race but it’s also equally frustrating that a POC will yet again lose the race at finish line. It’s exhausting and discouraging. Yeoh is part of a film beloved by critics, audience, industry. She has the most regional critics wins. Like everything is in her favour and yet she will lose to another white woman. There are 4 narratives, each playing in every category. Quan, Bassett, Fraser – all have terrific performances and are frontrunners. And yet, like always, that narrative isn’t benefiting a POC this year. It’s also surprising how less weightage some of us are giving to her potential win and what it will mean for Asian actors.
I am not dismissing Cate. She give a fantastic performance and her win will be much deserved. But I just won’t be the most ecstatic.
I think that Yeoh’s success made people forget what an “insurmountable” achievement her nomination and possible win is. We need to remember that Yeoh is a POC actress, an Asian actress, an actress in a sci fi comedy movie… There are a lot of things on paper that would go against her and yet Yeoh managed to turn them into her favor. Genre-bias is particularly important here because it even transcends the racial bias – we have seen actresses like Charlize Theron, Amy Adams, Lupita Nyongo being denied nomination for genre movies. We all know Mia Goth was even far from the conversation, let alone nomination. So many things worked against Yeoh and yet her talent overcame it. It is truly admirable.
But, I won’t deny her somewhat bad luck with timing. She is not facing some basic biopic role as it is the case every other year. She is facing one of the most respected Hollywood actresses in a movie that is much closer to Academy’s taste and what they award in this category. The worse, that performance has proven to be immune to its lack of narrative.
Then again, Yeoh may win so all of this becomes moot point. I have said that if Blanchett concludes the season with AACTA and BAFTA wins, she can without any regret join the standing ovation for Michelle Yeoh at Oscars. As for Yeoh, no matter what happens, I do hope this will bring her variety of roles and win or lose, this won’t be the last time we discuss her on these threads.

February 3, 2023 at 6:54 am #1205282120Whats up with this Clayton Davis hate? LMAO. Like y’all are some are some sorts of pundits who have powers of a seer.
EVERYONE including the “experts” on the main page are talking out of their ass and changing their predictions at the last minute, some even have their own agendas/biases and they are blatant about it.
If he bothers you that much you should skip his predictions.
Or maybe because he is Latino and that somehow irks some people?……i’m just saying.
P.S He was the first one to predict Angela Bassett and turns out he was right.
February 3, 2023 at 7:04 am #1205282134This board goes through phases of hating on specific pundits. Right now it is Clayton Davis. Months ago it was Zoe Bryant. Sometimes it is Matt Neglia. When someone turns out to be wrong about anything (which happens to everyone because no one is 100% right about anything) it is time to mock mock mock. 😛
I was so pissed off a month ago because almost everyone was acting like Babylon was still in the running for Best Picture and The Woman King had no chance to get in but turns out I was right and also wrong AF. Babylon was not in the running. But The Woman King didn’t make the cut either.

No, in the past few years Clayton Davis has ‘specifically’ been a target for a lot of people. I have been following his predictions when he had a primitive website and his takes (right or wrong) were fresh and more “populist” in nature. There is reason he got a job with variety.
And its hilarious how people are mocking him in one sentence and yet chastising him for not giving “spotlight” to black actresses (not POC but specifically black) in the next. Why would you care who is giving the spotlight to if you think he is a hack??
This whole thing reeks of “your people vs my people” and no one will call it out just like no one will call out Lil Rel Howery.

It’s been years that he is punctually mocked and not taken seriously in the more “prestigious” AW board, it’s not a last minute thing.

February 3, 2023 at 2:07 pm #1205282912Huns nominations for genre performances in lead ara a feat don’t matter if you white or black. Like it’s been said. Charlize Theron, Amy Adams and other have been denied nominations for genre. Same happen to Viola and Lupita.

I think racism had a part to play in that, as it probably impeded her from getting more prestige projects, but Berry doing stuff like Catwoman severely reduced her standing with the academy.

Victor, I suspect everyone knows you and everyone else saying Yeoh can’t win are right. Do we all bail and go with Cate?
Nope.
