Let’s not forget that Michelle Yeoh has previously been announced to be honored with the Dilys Powell Award, which is their highest honor.
BTW, Michelle Yeoh’s speech – a thing of beauty!

82% of UK population is white. What do you expect? That’s even more white than USA which is about 75%. China is 91% Chinese – what are the chances of any white person winning an award in China? It’s a fact of life. If you are Chinese and want an award, it obviously will be easier to win it in China, etc….. If you are White you have an advantage in a predominantly white country, etc. The key is that all of the winners were deserving regardless

Banshees wins best screenplay. Todd Field wins Best Director for Tar, Decision to Leave and Quiet Girl win Best Foreign Language Film
winning best screenplay, best actor, best supporting actress and best supporting actor is not enough to win best film apparently
these ‘critics circle’ just give awards to anything that makes them look smart and uninteresting to the public lol
February 5, 2023 at 10:42 am #1205285412i looked it up on mc, and looks like yes, this is the only set this year which went to all whites in the top categories, plus as a bonus british actor, british actress, breakthrough actor, and breakthrough director.
ig they figured an honorary award meant that they already filled up their diversity for the year and they could feel free to go all in on their white faves.
February 5, 2023 at 10:50 am #1205285426I was not exactly surprised by this. People forget that while EEAAO did great in US, in UK it didn’t go as well. Comparatively:
1. EEAAO: US box office: $72M, UK box office: $6,2M
2. Banshees: US box office: $10M, UK box office: $11M
3. TAR: US box office: $6M, UK box office: $1,8MThe numbers suggest TAR and Banshees are doing better with British audience than American one. Plus, we can’t forget that this is home-terf for Banchees’ crew. And that there is such thing as recency bias as Banshees and TAR are currently in UK cinemas.

February 5, 2023 at 10:54 am #1205285434As I mentioned before, EEAAO was likely to do better in the US because of its genre and was not likely to do as well box office wise in other regions that prefer dramas as in the UK and Europe. And the reverse would apply to Banshees and TAR. Americans prefer certain types of genre over dramas. That’s a no brainer.
February 5, 2023 at 10:57 am #1205285446Huns,
Cate Blanchett will win this in a landslide. It’s the performance with the most gravitas in the lineup.

Absolutely.
Her film could easily take home a basket of Oscars, but Yeoh will place second. Blanchett’s performance is towering.
