Darling, there’s only 3 lead actress nominees so far in this century who get in without getting nominated in a single major precursors.

    Laura Linney, The Savages
    Penelope Cruz, Parallel Mothers
    Andrea Riseborough, To Leslie

I wonder who’ll be the next one. The race is much more exciting with the inclusion of these out-of-nowhere (in terms of zero precursors) contenders.

Yes, but not with the eventual outcome. I mean, there really hasn’t been wild surprises in any acting category since Adrien Brody winning for The Pianist and looking back at it, he was in the Best Picture winning film.

I think he’s the only under 35 lead that’s ever won the Oscar.

Chicago won Best Picture that year, not The Pianist.

You’re right! I was thinking about Best D*rector and that came out (which tell us that The Pianist was the runner-up).

Laura Linney and Penelope Cruz were not as unexpected as Andrea.

Penelope had won Volpi, NSFC and LAFC, and was nominated for AACTA, Satellite, Austin, Houston, ICS, Minnesota, San Diego, SF, European Awards and was runner up in Toronto.

Laura was nominated for Chicago, London, Gotham and Satellite so Laura was a bit more of a surprise than Penelope.

Laura Linney’s nom was so inspired, I hope one of her new projects lands on the Oscars radar
